Border Run 2012 and the Scenic Way Home

Border Run 2012

Once again it was time for the Border Run - hurrah!  I had initially booked in my leave to start on the Wednesday, with the intent to get the border on Friday so that I could spend Saturday kicking back and just watching all the bikes roll in.  Alli and I had a loose plan to meet up at Port Augusta on the Thursday, then that got change to meeting up at Ceduna on Friday morning as she wanted to catch up with some relatives on the Thursday night.  I had been a bit worried about the cold starts and doing a 1,000km day (I had registered to do the FarRide) and eventually on the Monday I came to the realisation that I don’t have to do 1,000km day, I finished up all my work and my boss let me have the Tuesday off as well :D

Also, not that long before the start the FarChallenge was issued - 50 locations around Australia, the challenge - to take a picture of my bike at as many of them as I can in the next year.

Got home and attempted to start packing - well I managed to fit two sleeping bags, a blanket, a foam mat and a self-inflating mattress into a bag.  That was a good start.

Tuesday morning I woke up and managed to pack everything else and get the bike loaded up in reasonably good time, I think it was by about 9am.  But it was still too cold to leave so I hung about until maybe 10:30am before getting under way, when the temperature got above 5 degrees.

As I was heading out on Ginninderra Drive, I was going to turn up Kingsford Smith Drive but then I thought nah… I’ll go down to the end of Ginninderra Drive, I think that ways actually a bit quicker…. Well it would be if I was going to Sydney, I was supposed to be going west.  I realised after I had just passed Kingsford Smith Drive so I turned at Copland Drive instead (duh).

I headed out through Yass and onto the Boorowa Road.  The sun was out  and the countryside was pretty but I was cold and just wasn’t enjoying it really.  Cowra for fuel then out through Eugowra and  into Parkes for a short stint on the Newell before turning off for Narromine after Peak Hill.  For some reason SPOT has me starting just north of Peak Hill… I don’t know why.

Fuel again at Narromine then west with Cobar on my mind for the night.  Before long I was sick of riding into the sun, so decided to try my luck at Nyngan, the first pub was booked out, but the Overlander had a room for $60.00.  $60.00!!! Yikes! But I didn’t want to keep riding into the sun so what the hell.  Turned out it had an ensuite so it was definitely reasonable.  A shower and a walk down to the RSL for a pretty good mixed grill (they have salad bar as well) and then back to the pub to stand in front of the fire for ages before heading up and crawling into bed and watching the Olympics for a bit.

I woke up during the night, I had dreamed that I had ridden through Cobar and Broken Hill and then gone home, forgetting to take the FarChallenge photos and it was the next morning and I was all like “but I forgot about the Border Run, now I have to go out again”.  Took me a moment to realise I wasn’t at home, in fact I was in a pub room in Nyngan and had yet to pass through Cobar and Broken Hill LOL!

Wednesday morning came around and my phone informed me it was quite cold.  I stayed in bed for ages before getting up and venturing out in search of coffee and breakfast (across the road).  The lady in the café was feeling quite bad - she had been rousing on her daughter as she is always running late in the morning.  The night before the daughter had, in an attempt to speed up the process in the morning, put her school uniform on and then put her pyjamas on over the top and gone to bed so that in the morning all she had to do was take off her pjs and she would be ready…. Such logic!

Finally it warmed up enough for me to leave, about 9am I think.  Thought about fuel, figured she’d be right to Cobar so off I went in the morning sun.  I stopped at the big Cobar sign and went to take my picture…. Oops forgot the flag so got my photo properly, then fuel and continued on.  I was a bit edgy about stopping in Wilcannia for fuel so wanted to get that over and done with ASAP.  As I rolled into town, I think it was a different Wilcannia to the one we stopped at in 2009 (though I could see the same servo we stopped at, though now it is a Liberty).  I saw a sign pointing to a BP so I followed the signs and  it was a fuel pump in a dirt driveway with a tin shed for an office but the lady was very friendly - no toilets but she let me use the one in her laundry (the house was next door).  A suggestion was made for a coffee shop up the road but instead I continued on and stopped at a rest area about 16km past the town for a bit of a break.

Onwards and  Broken Hill came about… I remember loving the countryside in 2009 - this time I just didn’t care, I actually just wanted to go home, wasn’t enjoying myself at all really.  Flew straight past the location for the FarChallenge pic (I think), oh well, I’ll find something in town.  Fuel again and continue south.  The day was starting to run out and I was getting cold.  I stopped for fuel in Yunta and was informed that the pub over the road had accommodation and meals so I stopped in there.  The publican was a bit… funny and the room was $60.00 (again!) but I really didn’t feel like continuing on so paid it.  The publican’s wife showed me around the back where I could park my bike in the car port, etc. and a big fat Labrador was in a yard out there.  I was advised that he was too old and fat to jump the knee high fence when he barked at me!  She told me that his favourite game was to NOT give you the ball, but to let you just try and take it away from him.  So I tried for a bit J

The shower was not very good at the hotel but the room had a heater (and an electric blanket!!) so I warmed up in there before heading into the bar for dinner.  It was a very quiet night, apart from a couple of people coming in for takeaways I was the only one there, so chatted with the publican and his wife.  Turns out he has a Goldwing so we exchanged riding stories.  Steak and chips with Diane sauce for dinner and it was FABULOUS.  Another early night and I went back to my room and crawled into bed with the electric blanket and wished some more that I was at home.

Thursday morning wasn’t as cold as I had expected (they had had minus 5 the night before I was there) so over to the roadhouse for some cereal and coffee before packing up and playing with the lab some more.  This morning I didn’t try and get the ball from him so instead he gave it to me and I played fetch with him for quite some time.  But eventually I got going and kept heading south… I crossed a bridge, the three sisters bridge and it made me think of my sisters so I stopped and took a photo… then I did battle with the winds on through Peterborough and Wilmington and onto Horrocks Pass.

I roughly knew where the cairn was but I had never been up there, so my FarChallenge card and the wind had quite a battle while I tried to take a picture but eventually I got it and down down I went.  I had hoped the wind would have eased off down the bottom but nope.  Gave a big salute to Davo as I passed the plaque site and into Port Augusta for fuel… something wasn’t right.  It was now a Gull!  Parked the bike and hid behind him from the wind while I ate some bickies before proceeding on.  I had heard from Alli here too - she was having a slow start and hadn’t left home yet.  She thought she would be lucky to make Port Augusta that night let alone Streaky.

I was debating whether or not to head down to Elliston for the next FarChallenge pic or to get it on the way home and just head straight for Ceduna, I made the call at Kyancutta and turned left.  At Lock I turned right and what an eerie road that was, through all the farmlands, a bit of road in very good repair and absolutely NO ONE on it.  There was nobody, didn’t see a single person.  It was a bit freaky actually.  Into Elliston and rode around trying to find the sign in the picture.  Didn’t find it so snapped this one then on to get fuel (found it at the other entrance to Elliston lol).  While I was getting fuel two guys on adventure bikes turned up, got chatting as you do and I asked if they were heading to the border run… “the what????” actually one of them had heard of it but had no idea when it was on.  They were heading over to Perth from Melbourne and thought that they would be passed the border by Saturday but would keep it in mind.  Wished them well in their travels and continued on.  I had planned to stay at Ceduna and also had in my head that Streaky Bay was really expensive and I didn’t want to stay there but by the time I got to Streaky I had had enough of riding into the sun (again!) so pulled up at the pub where $60.00 (yes again) saw me with a budget room upstairs.  What an awesome shower!!!!  Went down for dinner and there were a few people who I expected were on the border run.  I had dessert and was thinking about going up to bed and watching some more Olympics when YAYAY Chicky turned up at my table with Bill and a couple of other blokes I didn’t know.  They ended up at the table next to me and asked me to join them which I did.  My mood was instantly better, these guys are awesome, I really enjoyed the time I spent with them last year.  Barry turned up too and I was introduced to the two guys who weren’t there last year (Trev and Possum).  Spent ages there chatting with them and listening to their banter.  These guys have all known each other for longer than I have been alive and I find it really interesting and warming to sit in on their discussions.  Eventually though it was time for everyone to go to bed so they left for the caravan park and I went back upstairs, after finding out they were heading for Penong the next night at the caravan park, if I wanted to stay there also.

I messaged with Alli - she was at Stirling North for the night and thought Penong sounded good so we had a plan to meet there and see how we were going.

Friday morning I found my way downstairs for the complimentary continental breakfast (raisin toast AND cocopops! Yay!) and then went for a walk down to the end of the jetty.  It was a bit cold but I stood on the end and faced the sun and it was beautiful.  There was a fishing boat there so I had a bit of a sticky beak at that and then headed back to pack up and get moving.

All loaded up, Chicky & Co. were at the museum, I thought about stopping too but I had heard a rumour of a really good pie shop in Ceduna… I should have stopped lol!

Stopped for a little break at Smoky Bay and then into Ceduna to do laps trying to find the pie shop… I found a café with homemade sausage rolls so got one of those and took it down to the foreshore where I texted Alli to let her know where I was at and hung out for about an hour.  Eventually I got sick of standing there so continued on to Penong where I got fuel and then set up camp at the picnic table, I got there about 1pm lol.

I got sick of sitting there, though it was nice in the sun, so decided to go and check out the caravan park.  I think I confused the owners a bit, I think they though I was part of Chicky’s group, they had never heard of the border run.  It was really windy again, so the owner said I could set up my tent in the shed.  I did so and it wasn’t until later I thought that I should have (a) tried for a cabin or (b) not bothered with the tent and just had my sleeping bag… oh well!

The caravan park was pretty deserted but I managed to go and have my shower at exactly the same time as the only other person there, lol, and then crawl into my tent for a bit of a nanna nap while waiting for Alli.  After a while I heard a bike pull up, I got all excited thinking it was Alli so stuck my head out of the tent and it was Mark with a K, on a ZZR1100.   “What are you doing here” he says?  Lol! Chance meetings.  So he set up on the other side of the shed.  Chicky & Co. arrived at some stage, they were planning to have a bbq (which was in our shed).  Still waiting for Alli… I had that … uneasy … feeling when you are waiting for someone and haven’t heard from them.  Mark and I were just about to head over to the pub when I heard her bike coming YAYAYAYAYAY!!!!  She joined us in the shed and then we all headed over to the pub for a couple of drinks and some dinner (beef parma that barely fit on my plate).  Alli said that she rode for a bit with two guys who were heading to Madura and back to Border Village for the night.  Gotta be FarRiders I thought, she said they were “Tony and Chris”.  What a shame I thought, would have been awesome to catch them! But tomorrow I guess.

There were a bunch of dudes in the pub, some of them were pretty messy, but we had a really interesting chat with a farmer, about the challenges they face out there… “I’m not complaining but” he says… says he wouldn’t be anywhere else.  Eventually we headed back to the caravan park after nearly getting lost in the dark LOL then crashed Chicky & Co’s party for a bit before crawling into bed.  My two sleeping bags worked well, I was nice and warm!

Friday morning - I saw the beginning of sunrise as I walked over to the toilets… and then I crawled back into bed.  Eventually we all got up and wandered over to the roadhouse for breakfast then back to pack up… Mark got sick of waiting for us so off he went and eventually Alli and I got going too.  Fuel at Nullarbor and then the final run into Border Village wishing with all my might that there was a cancellation and we would get a bed.

Pulled up at Border Village and there were not as many bikes as usual there… inside to try for a room and the lady says she will have to get the manager.  When she left I noticed my name written in the book!!!!!!!  Turns out that they DID have my booking from last year after all, hurrah!!!! So we got our little donga down the back :D  We got changed and then it was time to socialise.  Found Gatey and TonyK, after missing them yesterday, was great to catch up with them, Nambucca seems like forever ago!  While I was standing at the bar waiting to order a drink (I was a bit invisible I think) a guy who was sitting next to me very kindly offered me his seat! Chivalry in this modern world, well I never… :D  We got chatting for a bit and his name is Geoff and is from Perth and it was his first border run (I reckon he’ll be back).  Found Gatey and Tony again and was much amused by Gatey taming a crow with twisties, he actually had it eating out of his hand!

I felt like chips for dinner so ordered the chicken drumsticks because they came with chips… I was very disappointed when my plate turned up with a few puny drumsticks and a pile of salad and NO CHIPS.  I queried… apparently it wasn’t supposed to be listed as coming with chips.  Not much of a dinner, lucky I wasn’t all that hungry to begin with or there would have been trouble! Lol.  Caught up with a few more people, partook in the FarRiders group photo, played some pool and before too long I hit the wall and it was time for bed.  So off to our little donga.  I woke up pretty early and got a bit bored lying in bed so snuck out to the roadhouse and left Alli to a sleep in, I had coffee and caught up with a few that I had missed catching up with last night (I think the border run needs to last for at least a week to properly catch up with everyone!), then I went and caught up with the two guys from Elliston, and one even let me sit on his bike (for a big looking adventure bike it was quite small and light)… I had locked the door behind me when I left so didn’t want to disturb Alli but eventually I did… up to the roadhouse for breakfast , watched the last riders leave and then we eventually went and packed up our stuff.

Fuel and then we were on our way (after confirming they weren’t taking bookings for next year yet L ).

We stopped at the first ‘scenic’ lookout and it was quite pretty.

We stopped at the second ‘scenic’ lookout and it was even prettier… though the road in was a bit hairy! LOL lucky it was short.

The third ‘scenic’ lookout took my breath away… just magnificent.  We ended up spending, I don’t know, maybe an hour there? Just watching the waves pound against the cliffs… pure magic.

The fourth ‘scenic’ lookout was the best of them all.

At the third lookout we met this lady called Barb.  Barb was travelling home to Western Australia from holidaying in Queensland where she had contracted whooping cough.  She is travelling alone and just sleeps in her car, she was heading to Border Village that day.  Barb is 76.  She was quite inspirational, I hope that I still have an adventurous drive when I am that age!

Eventually we made it to Nullarbor Roadhouse where we got the third last room, turns out they were having a function there that night, the girl behind the counter thought they were nuts, why the hell would you want to go out there? Apparently she doesn’t like it very much out there.  I had some washing to do so we sorted that first and then went into the bar to source a drink (me very classy in my pj’s as my jeans were in the wash haha), we wanted to get some vodka to take away as we wanted to sit outside our room and watch the sun go down but they only had a full size bottle… and it was $72.00.

$72.00.

Stuff it, I bought it.  (The Ridiculously Expensive Vodka Bottle is now sitting on my shelf at home on display!).  Alli got the coke and some chips and we dragged half the furniture out of our room to settle in and watch the show.  There was another rider, Mark, staying a couple of rooms up, he has been riding around Australia for the last five months, he meant to make the border run but got sick in Esperence so missed it by a bit, he might have a go next year though J

Anyway we traded stories with him for a bit before the main show, he left to and get dinner and well Alli and I got a little bit sidetracked with the sunset show and the vodka and talking to some dudes about augers…. Well if we wanted dinner in the bar we had to order by 7:30pm and we missed it!!  But that’s okay we just had it in the roadhouse (me still in my jammies but now with bike jacket as my jumper was also in the wash).  Eventually our washing was dried so back to the room to sort that and then into bed where Alli tried to explain what was happening in “Once Upon a Time” to me but I failed to understand so promptly fell asleep.

Monday morning I woke up before Alli and went out in search of coffee, Mark was packing up so chatted to him for a bit before trying to sneak back into the room but waking Alli up.  We all had breakfast in the roadhouse, then Mark left and Alli and I went back to packing up and then it was off to Head of Bight to see the whales.  Beautiful, though every time I pulled my camera out they stopped doing cool things (like tail shows and sticking their noses up in the air) and went underwater so I gave up in the end and just watched… pretty cool J oh yeah and more cliffs to watch the ocean pound against…

After about an hour and a half we figured we should probably get moving so into Penong for fuel (where we spotted Mark across the road at the pub, big waves across the street) and then we went into Ceduna and found the right pie shop and…

THEY HAD RUN OUT OF PIES

*CRIES*

So Alli got a sandwich and I got a hotdog and we contented ourselves with that.  We had been planning on staying at Venus Bay for the night so we looked it up but we couldn’t determine that we would actually get anything to eat there, as it was we ran out of daylight (and warmth) by the time we got to Streaky Bay so we just got a room there… and found Mark there as well.  We had a couple of drinks and then it was dinner time, more sharing of stories with Mark (he has had some adventures on his trip!) and then he left and Alli and I did the same… after a big dessert :D

Tuesday morning we got up and had our breakfast and thought about a walk out on the jetty but it was a bit windy and cold so we skipped it.  Packed up and while Alli was out on one load with her stuff, she took ages to come back and it turned out her cousin had turned up so we had a bit of a chat before getting underway.  We ran into Mark again at the servo, wished him well as he was going to the ferry to go to Adelaide so we wouldn’t cross paths again.  We also decided to skip going to the sea lion colony as it would have involved about 70km of dirt and I was too chicken.

We went down to Venus Bay for a look around and it was WINDY.  Got lots of sand blown into my face lol.  Had a quick break there then over to Kyancutta for a pie then Kimba for some more food… terrible haha.  We were planning on staying at the Nutbush Retreat but when we got there, they didn’t have any meals on that night.  We didn’t want to go hungry so instead into Port Augusta for fuel and then up Horrocks Pass and into Wilmington for the night.  We arrived in rush hour, took the poor lady behind the bar some time to get to us.  And we were quite thirsty!  Got the bikes around the back then a long hot shower for me and a few drinks and it was dinner time… the mixed grill won… just!  It was fantastic though.  An earlyish night, I roasted myself with the electric blanket hahaha.

Wednesday morning and it was to be the Parting of the Ways.  We had breakfast across the road and then said our farewells (though I would follow Alli to just out of Melrose).

While we were at Nullarbor Nico had posted up a new spelling word, BUTTBURNER so while we were there I grabbed a photo for an N and headed off to Booleroo Centre for my first B, then onto Burra for another B and a FarChallenge photo :o)  Down the Worlds End Highway and it was still windy as.  Robertstown for an R and Eudunda for the E, through Kapunda and on to Tarlee for a T and another FarChallenge pic.  As soon as I turned towards Tarlee the sky just looked terrible.  I almost wished I had of skipped the FarChallenge pics and chased the good weather instead! But no, I got in amongst it, through a lot of towns I don’t remember (and there were a lot of towns) and then I found myself in the Adelaide Hills.  I was trying to get to Clarendon, and it looked on my map like there was this really easy road that would take me there but stuffed if I could find it.  I ended up doing 95km to end up 5km from where I started.  It was raining, there was so many towns, I ended up at a little town called Crafers where a T-intersection sign said left for Adelaide (wrong way) and right for Stirling (also wrong way, and I’d already been there lol) so I consulted my phone which told me to go south… stuffed if I knew which way was south so I ended up cracking the shits with the whole thing… SCREW YOU CLARENDON, I’M GOING HOME (or to Strathalbyn).  So I jumped on the freeway and headed east and as soon as I passed Stirling the sun came out…

Into Strathalbyn where the ladies in the visitor info centre helpfully told me it was really easy to get to Clarendon from there… I just didn’t even want to know about it anymore lol.  I was looking for some cheapish accommodation, they said $90 at the caravan park for a cabin or $70 for a pub room at the pub… serious?  $70 for a pub room?  No way (I’d seen the pub, it didn’t look real nice), so I headed on to Wellington instead where they wanted $50.00... I didn’t want to go any further so said okay, turns out that it included an ensuite, a TV and reverse cycle air con (HEATER!!) so that was actually pretty good.  Funky smelling water though lol.  Anyway had a brilliant dinner there too (another steak and chips) before finding an extra doona in the cupboard and climbing into bed to watch more Olympics and then to sleep.

In the morning I got up and went for a little stroll down to the river (the pub is right on the river) and it was beautiful.  But I had to get moving so I packed up, got fuel and had a lonely ferry crossing before making my way to Parilla for a FarChallenge pic and Pinnaroo for the same… at the bakery (had to try a pie while I was there… it was good but it fell apart so a bit messy).

I had a big decision to make here… which way will I go?  My original plan had been to go through Ouyen and Tooleybuc, Moulamein, etc.  But then I decided that I still had plenty of time, I didn’t have to be home until Sunday, so I was going to go and find Buninyong and Wangaratta and get those FarChallenge pics as well… yeah.  So I did a few laps of Pinnaroo as I forgot where the servos are (oops) then set off for Bordertown and crossed into Victoria.  I got rained on a bit along there and for the rest of the day on and off.

I had identified a few roads to get me off the A8 but in the end I just sat on that.  Stopped and took a picture of the big cranky looking koala at Dadswell Bridge (thanks Ken!).  Into Ballarat with the FUEL FUEL YOU NEED FUEL blinking furiously at me then found the CFA shed at Buninyong.  It was pretty much dark by that time so hit the freeway towards Melbourne and found my way to the M31 to start heading for Wangaratta (next FarChallenge spot).  Stopped at Seymour for fuel and a thaw out, I was very, very cold by then!  I ordered a hot chocolate and a box of 3 dimsims… It turned out to be a magical box of dimsims, I thought it was never going to run out (I think the lady took pity on my and gave me extras).  Warmed up as best as I could, back onto the bike where it promptly started raining on me properly hahaha but the dimsims and hot chocolate kept my belly nice and warm so it was much more bearable.  I had worked out that Wangaratta would have me at about 1020km for the day, enough to qualify me as a finisher for the border run (on FarRiders), and that was only 145km away so I admired the big fat raindrops in my headlights and the trucks as I passed them and eventually I got to Wangaratta at about 10:15pm.  I decided a motel would be in order, the first one was on the outskirts, that won’t do, but the second one was next door to maccas… that’ll do, and it was only $80.00 AND it had a heater AND an electric blanket :D

Spent an age in the shower before dressing up and braving the outside world again to fetch some maccas… one of the best cheeseburgers I have ever had.  Had a chat on the phone with my sister for quite a while then it was time for bed (and I roasted myself again hahaha).

Friday morning was cccold in Wangaratta! Eventually I dragged myself out of bed, put on all the clothes I had and got some more maccas for breakfast (I don’t usually eat maccas when I am out on rides so it was a bit odd).  Eventually it warmed up enough for me to get started and I headed to Rutherglen for an R, then Urana and Uranquinty for U x 2 and The Rock for a T.  With all the spelling letters obtained I headed through Wagga and onto Ladysmith for the last FarChallenge pic for this ride…and there was a black GTR1400 that is not black (lol) coming the other way… gotta be a FarRider surely.  Sure enough, I pulled up at the Ladysmith sign to see where the pic was supposed to be and Gus (from WA) pulled up, I had thought it might be him.  He’d come up from Eden that morning over the Awesome Road (aka Snowy Mountains Highway).  Dude, no way I would go there in winter!!! But he had a good run so that is good.  Wished him well in his travels, got my pic and then it was a beeline for home.  Got in about 4pm and spent another age in the shower… I love my shower!

Planetary Adventures aka FarRally RTM #2

I tried to make this shorter, really  :facepalm

In the lead up... I was planning on going and getting the tag up on the QLD border.  Friday night I was at mum’s trying to fix her computer when the rally pack came through... a quick glance, ah the solar system drive! I had seen quite a few of them over the years but in some of the locations I had no idea there was a planet.  I don’t have a printer at home and I didn’t want to use up much of mum’s ink so I just printed out the page with the map of the planets on it and went home.  Over the next couple of days I went and visited a lot of the planets, I noted the precise location of the ones I did find as they would be an absolute bitch to find in the dark (I hadn’t read the precise location of them on the webstie).  Indeed in the dark I rode straight past the Goolhi Road one twice, no idea of where it was.  I had also determined that there was NO WAY IN HELL I would be going up to the observatory if it was not full daylight... I worked out a plan that saw me getting all the planets relatively easy... and so I awaited the CURVEBALLS.  And when they came I was pleasantly surprised – they were not as unachievable (to me) as last year, HURRAH! A short detour saw me getting Temora with ease, my plan already had me going through Scone and it was only a short hop up to Uralla.  On Thursday I made two new plans, one which saw me also going to Goondiwindi, and I decided to make up my mind which plan I would follow in the morning (remembering there was another curveball to come that night...)  When it came (right on bedtime) I was again pleasantly surprised.... my plan had me getting into Coonabarabran at 6:30pm!  I didn’t think I’d make the one ‘up the hill’ though.  Awesome.  Went to bed and pretended to rest while staring up at the ceiling.

Friday, 30 March 2012

I was up at 5:15am for the few last minute preparations.  I had some raisin toast and a coffee while checking to see if there were any last minute updates – the only one of note was the change to the weather forecast – apparently Tamworth (where I had a rough plan of overnighting) was expecting storms that night.... hmmmmm.
At about 6:30am I got dressed up in all the layers (it was a balmy 7 degrees in Canberra...) and wriggled the bike out of the garage.  Finally 7am came about, snap snap start photos taken, text sent (forgot the ‘starting now’ so a second text sent!)  Off to Kippax (3km away) to get my start receipt.  I had fuelled up the night before – it was public service pay day the day before and the servo was busy (as expected) so just got an ATM receipt.  Checked the details, all good, quick note in the log and I was off  ;D

The fog got progressively thicker as I headed to Yass.  The commuters were starting to head into town so there was plenty of traffic coming in the opposite direction.  The fog was so thick I didn’t see the golden arches until I was right on top of them, bypassed them and was starting to worry about how I was going to see any oncoming traffic in this fog when I had to turn right across the freeway for the Harden turn-off... the weather gods must have been smiling upon me as about 2km before the turn the fog lifted and I made my right hand turn with the sun beaming down upon me.  Before long the fog was back but not for long, just in dribs and drabs as I passed through Binalong and by the time I got into Harden it was cold but the sun was definitely there to stay.

On through Cootamundra, Bethungra and Ilabo and the first fuel stop at Junee.  I purchased my first sugar free gum and my receipt called it ‘sweets’!  Still cold as I rolled out west, Old Junee, Coolamon, and onto my First Point Location at Grong Grong.

Stopped at the Grong Grong sign for my FPL photo and then passed the pub (didn’t look like anyone was about) and over the other side of the tracks was the general store/post office.  Purchased some gum and asked for a receipt.... and my receipt said 29/3/12 and 9:41 (it was 30/3/12 and 10:43!!)  I hand amended the receipt and the staff were very amused at my concern about the wrong information on the docket.  Oh well, what can one do??

Now I could start collecting points :D Snapped a pic at the general store for an “R” for “ride”(this year we could use the first or second letter of a town name for the spelling).

Out the other side of town, just got up to speed and I spotted a water tower... nevermind I will find another one (I never saw another one).  Ardlethan for an “A” for “planet” then a right hand turn, heading for Temora.  At Temora I got a “T” for “planet” and I meant to get another “E” but didn’t find somewhere good to park... will get another one down the road.  At Reefton I got an “E” for “planet” and a grain silo – it was starting to warm up now!

Coming into Barmedman I spotted the cemetery as I went sailing by so a quick u-turn and I snapped the cemetery and removed the first layer here.  The police station in town had a police car parked in the driveway, I stopped but there was too much trees in the way so I figured I’d find another one down the road (I didn’t!).  Next stop was Wyalong, got fuel and bought a V before heading into the car park... I reversed into the last shady car park and then a car came along and squeezed in beside me... like dude, I could hardly even get out from beside my bike!!!.  I had a bread roll and my V while checking my progress and removing even more layers and then Nev rolled in, got fuel and pulled up nearby, we had a bit of a chat while he stripped off some layers too (it really was warming up).  He noted that he had just enough time to get to Siding Spring Observatory before the 6:30pm closure if he only stopped for the essential spelling and planet photos.  He was very quickly back on the road and I thought about it for a moment... yeah if Nev can do it so can I! Lol!  I had pretty much planned on getting all my spelling photos before Coonabarabran (except for the N) and on the way to Parkes I reworked that plan in my head and figured out where I could pick up a lot of the letters later.  So I passed Nev stopped at Parkes taking a pic and I stopped at the Alectown sign for an “L” for “planet” and Nev pulled up behind me... he is fast, he was outta there before I was! Lol.  He stopped at Tomingley and I passed him there and then I stopped at Peak Hill for a “P” for “planet” and Nev passed me and stopped at a different Peak Hill sign hahaha so I was back out in front.  I stopped at Dubbo for a “D” for “ride” and no Nev... I found the Visitor Centre and snapped my first Pluto and had a bit of a break for some water (it was really hot now) and then I made the mistake of forgetting about all the other servos in Dubbo and just going to the one I usually fill up at.

Now when I usually fill up in Dubbo it is around 9pm and very quiet.  There is only one premium pump and both sides were blocked by cars with trailers and no drivers to be seen.  I waited for a bit, getting some more water into me and then I thought it would be good to go to the bathroom while waiting for the drivers to appear so I did so... I heard one car start up and drive off and as I walked out another car pulled in, again blocking the premium pump.  I swore a bit... in the end I think I was there for about half an hour (the eftpos machine was broken as well).
Eventually got underway again, stopped at Gilgandra for a Neptune photo and an “I” for “ride” and then on to the Tooraweenah rest area for Uranus and then my first Saturn.  Off again and I am watching the clock and I realise it is going to be super tight to get to Siding Spring before 6:30pm.  I was starting to stress about that a bit and in the end I decided that I wasn’t going to even try, and instead turned off on the Binnaway Road and got the second “Saturn” instead.

Got into Coonabarabran and found Clint and Drain at the visitor centre... and it was 6:28pm.  Quick chat with them then onto the servo for fuel.  Stopped at the last Saturn on my way out of town and a station wagon pulled up to make sure I was okay, that was nice  ;D.

It was getting on in the day and I decided not to go up to the observatory and just went out to Goolhi Road turn off to get the next Uranus, and swapped visors here – Crappy and pulled up for his photo and a bike came through from Mullaley – quick brake and u-turn and there were three of us there.  I headed back towards Coona and three or four bikes passed the other way – right turn back onto the Newell and I was in the Pilliga Forest.  I was a bit nervous about this stretch as it was fully dark now – I had never gone past Coona before in the dark as the truckies have always warned me about the forest at night, pigs and roos oh my! But I didn’t see anything.  Stopped and got another Uranus then as I was pulling out a truck came by so I tucked in behind him (well a fair distance behind) and followed him to the Pillage 2 rest area where I got Neptune.  There were plenty of campers at the rest areas... they must have hated all the motorcycles pulling in and all the flashes.

Narrabri for fuel, a much needed visor clean, a snacky and an “N” for “planet”.  Headed up to Bellata where I had a nice 4WD to follow, got my Pluto pic and the other “E” I needed for “ride” and now I was done with the spelling.  Back to Narrabri... I debated whether or not I should get fuel... nah she’ll be right  I thought.  Turned off for Gunnedah and was behind two trucks and a bike came past me and the first truck and quickly past the second.  I eventually got past the trucks and saw the bike in front every now and then.  Stopped in Boggabri to add another layer as it was getting pretty cold now and then into Gunnedah for another Neptune and also found the Gunnedah Hotel.  Thought about getting fuel but again... she’ll be right!  :lol

I had passed a rest area a few weeks back just outside of Gunnedah and I had thought that might be a good place to stop.  I pulled in and spotted the big picnic shelter, got around the otherside and it was already occupied!! (by Nev! I can’t believe I didn’t wake you with headlights shining on you!) so I pulled back out and kept going, figuring I’d check out the next one... which wasn’t until Tamworth!  I pulled into the Tamworth rest area across from the airport with my fuel light flashing FUEL FUEL YOU NEED FUEL!, and with 5 minutes to spare for the rest bonus.  A quick snap of Pluto and I looked around and just pushed the bike about two metres, did the necessary photo thing, rolled out my swag and crawled in.  I first of all set my alarm for 3:15, then lay down and closed my eyes.

Then I sat up and reset my alarm for 3:30am and lay back down and closed my eyes.

Then I sat up and reset my alarm for 4:00am and lay back down and closed my eyes.

(I like my sleep okay).

I woke up again at 3:20am.  I lay there for a while wanting to get up and get going but not wanting to leave the warmth of my sleeping bag.  At about 3:40 I eventually crawled out, packed everything back up, and was back on the road again at about 4:05am.  Fuel and then I headed out towards Uralla.  Up the Moonbi hill and then I hit FOG and COLD!  It was not very pleasant.

Got into Uralla and it was still dark o’clock and foggy fog and there was already a bike parked next to the horsie, so I parked on the road.  Rider said hi, turns out it was John, hi John! Quickly he was off but he stars in my first photo (just a taillight and some fog, flash off was much better).  Snapped a pic of the Uralla pharmacy and there were two dudes sitting on a park bench a bit further up, they must have wondered at the mad motorcyclist doing star jumps outside the pharmacy (I was trying to warm up a bit and psyche myself up for the trip back to Tamworth).

I kept telling myself that the fog would be over soon but it kept going and going... it had come further down.  Back into Tamworth as the sky was starting to show some light, stopped for fuel again and rode around town for a bit to see if I could find anything else for some points while waiting for 7am so I could make my second call in  :D

While I was sitting there I worked out that I was just short of 1600km for the first 24 hours... wow.  :o

Just after 7 I did the call in and continued on down the New England Highway, spotted a "B" Gully and pulled up at the one on the other side of the road. At Willow Tree I spotted the Willow Tree Inn so pulled in for a pic there then I saw a sign for a railway station so I turned around and went there too.  Checked my messages and the fifth item was to be an engagement ring... I can do that!

Into Scone and I pulled into the big BP to grab a Kit Kat and there were approximately 100 harleys there (probably an exaggeration).  They said something to me about my helmet as I went in, I don’t know what, then while I was filling out my log they decided that their ride that day was going to be to maccas next door.  I kid you not.  Oh well, I had a little chuckle to myself before reminding myself about all kinds then continued on to find the next horsie, there were some girls playing around taking photos, too bad girls, you are now in my photo!  Spotted the turn off to Merriwa and that was a great bit of road that I had not done before!
Soon enough I was in Merriwa and tried to guess which side of town the next Pluto might be at... I guessed wrong but I found an info sign that told me where it was :D I got distracted by a bakery though, so took off my jacket and sat inside to have my breakfast and go over my paperwork so far, and asked the lady to take my photo... they thought I was very strange.

My lack of sleep from the night before was starting to show here, it took me a while to get going (pack everything up, oh I have to change visor.  Change visor and pack everything up, oh I have to change gloves... lol).  Snapped Pluto on my way out of town and then about 20km down the road I remembered that I was supposed to get fuel at Merriwa... oops! Did some calculations, the signs had told me it was another 100ish kms to Dunedoo from Merriwa... how far to Coolah?  I wasn’t sure but I thought it was closer (Coolah was where I wanted to go).  Promptly my fuel light came on.  Eventually I came to the Coolah turn off and checked my map – about 40km to Coolah, which would have me at about 290km from this tank which in theory is definitely doable but I have never done it.  Eventually I pulled into Coolah with the FUEL FUEL YOU NEED FUEL flashing at me... and I still had 1.5L left (hurrah for riding like a girl) :D

Through town to snap the next Neptune, waved to Mick and Lynne on the way through, snapped a pic of the pharmacy they were parked outside of on my way back through then off to snap Uranus at Dowd Road and then through Binnaway (newsagency and golf club pic), New Mollyann for the last remaining Uranus pic and started heading for Mendooran.  It was really getting quite warm now and I was getting quite tired so when I got to Dunedoo I got my last Neptune pic then moved the bike up to the next tree, grabbed my water and sat down under the tree and closed my eyes for a while.  Tigerbill came in (but tricked me in his versysbill disguise) then went around to the rest area, eventually I was feeling revived so I went around too and we chatted for a bit before I headed off to snap my last Pluto pic, then into Gulgong for an engagement ring... I got a beauty!

Then the final short stint into Mudgee, pulled into the visitor centre where there was already plenty of bikes parked up.

Got all my documentation and bits and pieces together and handed it all over to Drain, including my beautiful flashy rocky ring.  Chat chat chat, drank a lot of water, heard about Ron, WTF????? Damn.  Well at least he’s alright.

Eventually over to the motel and my long awaited shower.  I was not allowed to even think about lying down on the bed even for a minute so I headed into the reception to try and find out where I was going, found Lynne and Mick so we made our way to the RSL – dinner and chatting about the rally and all manner of things and then it was bed time.  Lay in bed listening to the drunken people not being able to find their rooms for a bit and then it was 6:30am.  What? I cannot be awake at 6:30am.  So I made myself lie there for another half hour until I was so bored I just had to get up.  Coffee.  I need it.  I had it.  (and eggs benny as well... yummo).

Met up with Zedpilot at the visitor centre for the trip back to Canberra and we headed out under a glorious sky.  Held up for a while at roadworks which meant we then had traffic the whole way pretty much to Bathurst hahahaha (I’m used to having empty roads).  On the road to Sofala we were held up behind two *very* slow Harleys, of the kind who go insanely slow around corners but gun it on the straights... eventually we got past them... had a chuckle at the ‘funaz’ number plate (didn’t look like much fun... takes all kinds Mel, takes all kinds) past Sofala and into Bathurst and then Cowra for fuel (didn’t see the bikes at the Mobil!) went to the BP as the last few times I went to the Mobil they didn’t have premium!  There were heaps of bikes at the BP, mostly BMW’s.  Turns out they were the Ducati Club  :lol  Sky was getting darker, headed for Boorowa and then RAIN!  Oh well it washed all the bugs off the bike  ;D  Stop at the bakery for a quick lunch and then home, it rained all the way but when I looked out an hour later it had all cleared up.

Once again another awesome rally!  :up

Tight-arse Touring

I spend too much money on rides.  With my house nearly being ready, meaning I will soon have a mortgage, I am supposed to be pretty much not spending ANY money.

And then TAG goes up in a reachable location...

Inglewood QLD and a long weekend.  I think YES.

I had some stuff to do before I left, so didn't get away until about 11:30am on Saturday morning.  Planned to get fuel at the Spence servo and now it is closed! I consoled myself with a pie from the bakery and then decided against backtracking, if the fuel light was on before Murrumbateman I would get fuel there, otherwise at Yass.  I rolled out onto the Barton Highway and it was just an easy cruise... I was just starting to get settled and I was at Yass already, bugger have to stop for fuel.

Fuelled up quickly and winced at the $20 (roughly) it cost and underway again... turned off to Boorowa and rolled straight through to Cowra.  Very different from last time I went that way, the sun was shining and it was warm with just a hint of coolness in the air.  The perfect day to be out on a motorcycle.

The current spelling word is CROSSCONTINENTAL so with that in mind I stopped at the Cowra Hotel for a C photo.

Headed out towards Canowindra and the road is in fairly poor condition.  Lots of large potholes and patches where the road surface is just disintegrating.

Straight through Canowindra and heading towards Cudal I noticed that there were a *lot* of trucks... don't normally see too many trucks on that road, took me a while to realise that with part of the Newell Highway being closed, I guess they have to come that way.  That would explain the road surface too...

I had a harley pull in behind me at some intersection and he was sometimes behind me and sometimes way back in the distance.  A BMW coming the other way pulled over, gave me the wave to let me know he was OK.

At Cudal I stopped to take another C photo and just as I was getting ready to continue the BMW came past.

So I pulled out behind him but he then pulled over and did a u-turn and went back the other way... okay!  Onto Molong where I stopped for fuel, just came back out from paying and there was the BMW.  "Are you lost!" I enquired, and it turns out he was.  He was heading to Ipswich (don't know where from but the bike had WA plates on) and had been diverted from the Newell at West Wyalong and now had no idea where he was... and no maps either.  I tried to tell him a really awesome way he could go but he looked at my map and decided he was going to go to Dubbo and straight up the Newell... fair enough!  I left and never saw him again, hope he made it okay.

Up the Mitchell Highway to Wellington and then finally time to leave the highways behind for a bit, turned off to Gulgong where I stopped for a bit of a break in the shade of a tree, then on my way to Coolah I found an L

Leadville for an L... if I ever get all the letters in between!

Coolah for fuel, straight past the pub although I was tempted by my memory of the steak dianne and the comfy bed... my goal now was to reach Mullaley before dark o'clock.

The road was fairly damaged in places here too, and the roadworks haven't changed from a few weeks ago.  I still love this road and the part north of Premer (where I usually join the road) was exceptionally pretty in the late afternoon sun.

Stopped at Tambar Springs for a T photo

Then onto Mullaley for a longer break at the rest area there, watching the sun that was almost all the way down.  I started thinking about where I was going to spend the night and after consulting my map decided that the campground it indicated at Lake Keepit might be the way to go.

The last of the sunshine at Mullaley.

I rolled out and headed for Gunnedah.  I pretty much had the highway to myself and just at the start it was really nice, but towards Gunnedah it was a bit of a strain as it was getting a bit too dark for the tinted visor and I was getting cold.

Fuel in Gunnedah, swapped visors and added my flanno under my jacket, bought a sandwich to have for my dinner and headed off, next stop Lake Keepit.

I was a bit worried as there was still a fair amount of water around, and last time I went through Carrol the causeway was flooded and I wasn't sure I wanted to do that in the dark - but all was good, it was dry! Yay!

Turned off for Lake Keepit and wasn't game to do more than about 60km/h.  There was a ute way off in the distance in front of me doing about the same.  I eventually caught up to them at the turn off to the campground and got there only to find the gates shut but some dudes were there... apparently there was some jazz thingo on that night by the lake.  They said the state reserve guys were being a bit funny about letting people in so I decided that I would keep going.  My map had also advised me of a rest area just out of Barraba that was an overnight stop also so I decided to go and check that out.

As soon as I was back on the road to Manilla two big roos hopped away in the headlights - they looked kinda like ghosts, was a bit creepy.  Anyway crawled along to Manilla, part way the big reddish moon started to rise - so beautiful.  I stopped and looked at it for a bit.

There was a fair on in Manilla and the rides lit up the night sky.  I stopped under a streetlight to add my jumper as it was getting very cold, then back on and continued up the road towards Barraba.  Just out of town I found the rest area and there was no one else there... I checked it out and there was a couple of roadways, some picnic tables and loos.  I found a spot under some trees out of the lights and rolled out my swag.  I was very scared!  I had one bite of my sandwich and the rest went in the bin (I give up on servo sandwiches, they used to be good but the last two I have had were both terrible!) so I crawled into my swag hungry.  And lay there for ages jumping at every little noise! hahaha.

At about 4:30am I woke to the sound of a car pulling in... they paused next to me and then continued on a bit.  Car doors and after a few minutes the car started up again and they sat there for ages just idling with the lights off... I was petrified! I don't know why.  But eventually (Finally!) they left and I went back to sleep, awaking at about 7:00am.

I unzipped the swag and had a look at my surroundings in the daylight - to my right was a hill, with the sun getting ready to poke his head out and some slight mist and a skippy hopping away up the hill... magical.  Took my time packing up and chilling out and eventually got underway.

Rolled through Barraba (hope the Barraba crew heard my telepathic shout out as I went through!  I am sure they did :D )

It was a bit on the cool side but what a fabulous morning for a ride!!!!  The hills were pretty, the trees were pretty, the grass was pretty, the road was pretty.... you get the picture.

After all the rain we have had lately the sun was most welcome.

It seemed all too soon I was at Warialda.  Fuelled up and then headed north towards Yetman.  Another road that has sustained a fair amount of damage, potholes big enough to swallow a ZX6R whole!

Right onto the Bruxner Highway then left and over the border.  I note a large grassy area with some camps set up, looks like a lovely spot but I have way too far to go to be thinking about stopping yet.  In Texas there is some bike thingo event on, the main street is closed and there are people everywhere.  Nevermind, I bypass it all and then The.... Most..... Boring..... part of my whole trip (I don't know why, it just was), the however far it is from Texas to Inglewood.  It was just monotonous.  Anyway finally after an age or two Inglewood appeared and I took a chance and turned right and found the tag location.

But there were some other bikes in my way! LOL.  Mike and Maureen had waited for me.  I snapped my photo and then I nearly forgot about the 'surprise' on the back of the sign.  I retrieved the card and we retired to a nearby cafe with a handy power point so I pulled out itty bitty and TAG I'm it! (thanks for not snatching it guys!)  Moved it down the road to the Ebor Falls Hotel.

A quick coffee and sandwich and M & M head back east and I head south.  It was really starting to heat up now and I was feeling a bit dozy so stopped at Texas for fuel and a chocolate and a V while I sat in the shade and consulted my map for a bit.  The best way to go would be back the way I came but I don't like to do that, so I turned left onto the Bruxner and then went down that way to Inverell.  It was quite nice!  But very hot.  Pulled up under a tree in Inverell for another map consult.  I wanted to go to Coonabarabran as I had an urge to go for a ride through the Warrambungles NP (very pretty) but I also wanted to do this other road on my map that I hadn't done before which would take me towards Uralla (I think).  I decided that the road could wait, and I headed west towards Moree.  Back through Warialda and then I got stopped at some roadworks.

I was a bit worried about what was down the bottom of the detour but it was fine :)

Cruised on, there were lots of signs warning of flood damaged pavement but none of it was too bad (well for a bike, just ride around the damaged bits).

Was really warming up now, stopped for fuel in Moree and bought a powerade as well - that helped, I almost immediately felt better after having some of that (I had of course been drinking lots of water as well).  Set off down the Newell, with the open fields.  I don't know why, I should hate the Newell but I actually really enjoy it.  More trucks than cars, and I love trucks.  It's a road that really goes places.   I don't know how to explain it but I love being out there.  Coming into Bellata and a truck flashes me.  At the last minute I spot the rest area, so quickly pull up to the left to turn around and go back to it... and notice that is where constable care is set up!  Oh well, I pulled up on the other side of him and had some more of my powerade.  Not long after he rolled out and headed south and I never saw him again.

Straight through Narrabri and into the Pillaga Forest.  The day was drawing to a close and the sun was flickering through the trees.  Into Coonabarabran where I got fuel and pulled up at the Coona Fish & Chips.  The fish and chips were TERRIBLE. I ate most of it anyway, chatted with a guy who has a busa and a triumph for a bit... he had bought a car in Melbourne and was driving it back to QLD.  He didn't know about all the road closures, had no map (just a GPS) and was pretty screwed... and the servos had all sold out of maps!  So when he was diverted he was a bit lost.  Talked about bikes for a bit then he bypassed the fish and chip shop on my recommendation.  (It was seriously bad).

I had noted a rest area out towards Mullaley and I set off to try and find it.  I found one at Oxley's Crossing but I didn't think that was the right one so kept going.... and never found it.  Ended up in Mullaley and then turned around and went back.  I stopped at the Oxley's Crossing one and thought about staying there but chickened out in the end.  I passed back through Coonabarabran (!) and headed south on the Newell until I finally found a rest area.  I was just doing a u-turn to park better when I realised there was a better rest area on the other side, so I went there, there were two trucks parked up so I stopped at the picnic hut and set up my camp in there.  Not long after another truck came and parked near to that.  I was very quickly asleep.  I heard another truck pull in, and only heard one truck leave.

I woke up at about 6:30am and forced myself to get up (I was quite warm and cozy).  This was the view I woke up to this time.

I do love trucks :D

I once again took my time packing up, very relaxed.

I managed to roll the swag up a bit better today as well - the day before I had not been able to see very much in my mirrors! lol.

I was just about to pull out onto the highway and head back to Coonabarabran when I thought I better have another piccie.

It was a pretty chilly ride back into Coonabarabran.  I rode through to the national park and had a nice ride through there checking stuff out.

Then it was back into Coona for fuel (again!) and I bought a pie from the bakery and a coffee from the Jolli Cauli Cafe (looks pretty good) and had my pie and coffee while watching the world go by.

Realised I had better get cracking so off I went, it was time to do another new road - the one through Binnaway to Coolah so off I went.  A few of the causeways still had water flowing across the bottom of them but nothing too much. It was a really nice ride through here and all too soon I was back at Coolah getting fuel again.  I noticed they had some home made cakes in the fridge so it was carrot cake washed down with blue powerade - yummo! :D

Headed towards Mudgee, stopped at Turill to get another T

and Eurunderee for an E

Stopped a while in Mudgee and then headed south towards Lithgow.  A very pretty part of the countryside, especially as you get closer to Lithgow with the sites of the blue mountains.

Ilford for an I

Then onto Lithgow for a good break and some food.  It was getting a bit cooler so I added the flanno here.

Headed out towards Oberon and I had a really good run through to Hampden.  Just beautiful.  (not beautiful enough to take a pic apparently though).

Then onto Oberon where I got an O and to be honest by then I was over it and ready to be at home.  But no, still some 250km to go, so heading towards Goulburn and it was FREEZING.  I was really regretting leaving my wets at home then!

Stopped at the Abercrombie river (where it was warm) to put on as much clothing as I could possible fit on and continued on, shivering my way through Taralga... then it got foggy!  So I rolled into a foggy Goulburn just on dusk.

I then had the privilege of paying $9 for a burnt toasted ham and cheese sandwich and a hot chocolate that was so hot I burnt my tongue :(  I got some cold milk for my hot chocolate and ate my charcoal flavoured toasted sanga and then braved the elements and got back on the bike for the final stint into Canberra.

And it warmed up! LOL. (or maybe it was all that warmness in my belly....)

There was a fair amount of traffic heading back... and the time passed quickly and soon enough I was home.  The first thing I did was jump in the shower.

So it was the tight arse tour because I didn't spend a single cent on accommodation and not much on food either.  But damn I spent a lot on petrol :o/ I think I need a cheaper hobby as I have now spent all my fortnights allowance :(  Oh well at least it was fun :D
