First Race! Wakefield Park 21/22 November 2010

Friday:
My weekend started on Friday with the trackday. I had no intentions of doing every session, I just wanted a chance to get a bit familiar with the bike again, and also make sure the new exhaust that had gone on worked OK and I didn’t want to wear myself out for the racing, so sat out the first session and headed out in the second session. This wasn’t much fun, as I think there were about 45(?) people out in the novice group - it’s not that big a track. I didn’t mind the bigger bikes coming past me, but when they come past me and brake, making me brake where I don’t need to… well it’s a bit hard to learn what the bike and I can do which was what I was wanting to day. Anyway.
I went out in the third session and pottered around, being held up (and probably holding up plenty of others as well, though I imagine I was pretty easy to pass). I eventually got a clear run through turn 10 and DISASTER one second I’m leaning over going round the turn and the next minute I’m sliding across the track.
We came to a stop right at the edge of the track, my left foot was caught up in the handlebars somehow so a bit of jiggling and I was free, pick up the bike and just run away from the track. Luckily that is right next to pit entry so I just pushed the bike back to the carports. I met Ali on the way and we cheered for my first ever crash (two little topple overs from standstill don’t count :P) MickLC and Charlie were standing on pit wall and never noticed anything until Adam (one of the marshals) ran up to them and pointed me out as I was just getting near to them.
Checked over the bike, bit of a graze to the brake lever and right foot peg, and the 4th dimension engine cover was bent, as was the bracket for the taco. Charlie straightened all this out for me and all was good… a bit later one of the guys who was next to us came over and reckoned that what had happened was the new exhaust, which sat a bit lower and out to the side than the original, had touched down, lifting the rear wheel off the ground. We found a little graze on the bottom of the exhaust so we figured this is what must have happened.
Luckily we had brought the original exhaust with us so Mick stuck that back on (with a new bolt fashioned from a part from Charlies ute!!) and it was good to go.
I had to get checked out by medical before I was allowed back out, and there had been a huge crash in the intermediate session after mine so I didn’t make it out for the fourth session but did for the fifth… there was a girl out there who was even slower than me and she had the marshal riding behind her with the hazard lights on… my nerves were shot to shit as it was, and this girl had some of the strangest lines I have ever seen – she was clearly very uncomfortable but she had a bit more power than me… I followed around for a little bit but didn’t feet comfortable with passing her anyway (after watching a few people going past after the marshal had waved them past, only to have her nearly move into them…) I ended up cracking the shits with the whole thing, stuck up my hand and pulled in (they stuck the chequered flag out as I was coming down pit entry anyway). There were supposed to be two more sessions, but they cut out the last one but I didn’t end up going out again anyway.
Saturday:
It was foggy as at the house on Saturday morning and I was feeling a little nervy for some reason… we got out the track, and my bike wasn’t ready for scrutineering before the riders briefing so I had to do it after… and I was first out for practice and I wasn’t feeling all that good about everything. I still hadn’t recovered my nerve from the crash the day before and was squealing a little bit in my helmet around the bends, especially turn 10. I came back in not feeling very comfortable about the whole thing – if it hadn’t of been for a garage full of people there cheering me on, I think I would have turned tail and ran home. Best time in practice was 1:45
In a very short period of time it was time for me to race. I gridded up and the nerves were pretty bad but I didn’t stall it on the grid and away we went. Everyone pulled away from me pretty quickly so I just rode around and was feeling a bit more comfortable on the bike which was good and then I got lapped! By three riders… oops. I really thought I’d do a bit better than that. Oh well, it was a hell of a lot of fun. I did two laps at 1:40 and two laps at 1:42.
There was a bit of a mix-up in the program, the events said it was practice for all co-riders – after one lap everyone was brought back in and it was just practice for those participating in the one hour on Saturday. Stace had kindly agreed to be my co-rider so his first go on lil stinky was in qualifying! He showed me what lil stinky can really do, best time was 1:34.
My second sprint race was a little bit better in that I managed to not get lapped… just! However, the leaders were not far behind me, I passed the last lap board and then the leaders, having finished their race came past me – as the red flag was out at pit entry I went in too. As they shouldn’t have done that, I got credited with a finish anyway, though my last lap is a 1:51, but I got three 1:41’s which is pretty consistent so that’s good.
Sunday:
At the briefing the steward made mention of the incident in my last race and everyone was asked not to overtake the backmarker, to let us finish our race :)
It turned out that there wasn’t a separate co-rider practice for the superlites – just the practice in the morning and it was up to me whether Stace or I was to go out. I let Stace go out and he got a 1:35.
First sprint race for the day, I felt like I got a pretty good start, even though pretty much everyone had gone by me by turn 2. What I didn’t realise was that there were a stack of bikes starting from pit lane so I got quite startled when they all came past me, but they did, and then I settled in and just rode. So much fun. I managed to not get lapped again *just* and Kev tells me that they weren’t far behind me, which I was kind of aware of as I had seen them coming down the hill towards the cauldron as I was going down the back straight. As soon as they came across the finish line they all put their left hands up and slowed right down so I got to finish my race! Best time was a 1:40.04!! That was my last lap, I got three 1:40’s in that race :D
Then it was time for the one hour. Stace had qualified 24th and was going out first, with the plan that he could put in some awesome times, get us up the field a bit and then I could go out and lose it for us!! LOL!! Unfortunately that didn’t go quite to plan.
The Le Mans start was pretty fun, for once lil stinky went into neutral without too much hassle, Stace is a fast runner and he was away while the riders to either side of us were still climbing aboard. An absolutely awesome start! :kuda:
About halfway into the race the safety car was out… I had been a bit nervous about joining the track with the faster moving traffic so Billy suggested that going out while the safety car was out might be a good idea so I went up to pit wall to wave down Stace but he didn’t come past…

The bike came back into the garage and it was amazing to see, I could barely see the bike for all the guys around trying to get it fixed so I could get out, everyone jumped in to lend a hand :kuda: . Billy had spoken to race control and they were going to let me go out if we could get the bike fixed in time, even though it was outside the rider change window, but unfortunately the bike wasn’t ready until there was only 3 minutes of the race left. Stace’s best time had been a 1:34.1 which is most excellent! (and he wasn’t hurt in the crash either which is most excellent).
That left the final sprint race for the day. The forks were a bit bent but had been turned around so they were the same and it steered straight… I set out for the sighting lap and the handlebars were all different and it felt quite bad at first (just different I guess). The thought crossed my mind about pulling in as I came up to Pit Entry but I decided to just get out and do it. I had grid position 20 for this one (thanks to DNFers!) so was on the outside and off we went. I really enjoyed this race, there was a guy in front of me who while he was a fair way in front of me I kept him in sight for the first couple of laps and was even gaining on him a little bit coming round the top of the hill and down into the cauldron :D He got away from me on the back straight, there was one stage where I was tucked right down giving it all I had… unfortunately I got lapped in this race as well (only just!). Best time was a 1:41 which surprised me as I felt like I did much better.
The bike actually felt like it handled a bit better – coming down the hill, just after the right hander kinky thing I would normally get some great wobbles going on… but this time I didn’t!
Wow that turned into quite a novel.
There are some huge thank yous – to Dave#3 for lending me the bike (regretting that now????), Gos for having it prepped on only a weeks notice(!), Mick LC for getting me out there and all the work on the bike on Friday, Stace for agreeing to be my co-rider even though I suck, Kev for being there on the pit wall for every single race start to finish, cheering me on – there were usually others there too who changed from time to time. Billy and Nobby and all the other ‘Pommy Geezers’ (:p) for all the help and support and PC and Yedi and Craig and everyone else who came out to watch.
Actually, I was just looking at the Natsoft site, and I think I actually came 7th in class, out of 9, just because I went out in every race!!!!!!!!!

Goodbye Zuki, ‘allo Crim!

It has been a long time since I did a blog… mainly because I haven’t been riding very much at all.
The 7 seemed to have recovered from his ‘electrical’ issue and a couple of weeks ago Dave sent me a text (signing off Dave ZX10R in case I didn’t know who it was… how many Daves have ZX10R’s? LOL) asking if I was going out on the ‘grean meanie’ that day… I hadn’t had any plans to do so, but in short order a plan was hatched… I was to go to Dave’s place in Gungahlin to meet him and another mate (whose name is now escaping me - black fireblade) then down the coast for lunch.
The boys were taking it easy (which meant they left me for dust anyway!) and eventually we had fish and chips at the Bay before heading down to Malua Bay becuase we could.  Shortly after we left the Bay the 7 did a huge backfire… not in the pipe but it felt like it was right under the tank.  Then it did it three times in a row so I pulled over, expecting it to stall (I half though it was the electrical gremlin coming back to play somehow) and it didn’t… OK.  Took off again and it ran fine, I caught up with the boys and we enjoyed the scenery at Malua Bay for a bit before fuelling up and then hitting the Clyde.  I was following Dave’s fireblade riding mate for a bit and then BANG the 7 started backfiring again… well I figured there wasn’t much I could do so I kept going… with the 7 banging all the way up the Clyde… I’d just think it had sorted itself then BANGBANGBANG off he’d go again :’(  At the top I think he stopped firing on a couple of cylinders and then stalled altogether.  I got off and had a look around but couldn’t see anything obviously wrong, he wasn’t leaking any vital fluids from anywhere so I tried to start him… wouldn’t start… then he did so I dawdled along very gently towards Braidwood in case I had to pull over quickly again…
The boys were waiting for me - a lady had pulled over and told them I was broken down - and then I just took it easy back into Canberra and the 7 behaved.
So then I had the shits with the 7! and for his punishment he would now have to share his garage.
I intended on Monday to go and pick up Zuki which had been out at CMC on consignment for quite a while… I had had some discussions some time ago with Seb about trading Zuki on something else and I thought while he was there might as well get him through the workshop… then I found a black Crim…
When I got out to CMC at lunchtime to testride the Crim, I found a green 06 636 <3 but Seb wouldn’t let me have it, he said I had to have the Crim LOL
So I rode it and a deal was done and I came home with a Crim (05 ZX10R, 16,ishkm Akrapovic pipe, and otherwise pretty much standard).

The Crim!
The Crim!

So since I have had the Crim I have done nothing but commute on him.
On 25 September (Saturday) I awoke to a glorious spring morning - I looked out the window and the sun was shining, the trees were still… what a glorious day for a ride, I thought, I should go for a ride!  But… I didn’t feel like going for a ride so I didn’t.
That feeling still hasn’t left me - I am happy enough commuting and would much prefer commuting on the bike than getting a car, but going out on the bike on the weekend just isn’t appealing to me at the moment :/ (I also haven’t really felt like having too much bourbon lately either… I think I might be broken).
So after having the Crim for two weeks, I took pity on the poor unloved 7 and decided to take him to work on Tuesday this week… I was a bit nervous about him having problems so I stuck in the left lane the whole way and only did one burst of overtaking :D.  All was good… until that afternoon when I went to go home - warmed him up like I usually do, helmet and gloves on, swing my leg over and stand him up and… dead.  Great, the fuse has blown again I thought.  Checked that, nope it looks fine.  Put a new one in just in case, still nothing.  Hmmm.  So I call Dr Bruce and the NRMA and my AWESOME sister and arranged for the NRMA to take the 7 to Dr Bruce in the morning and my sister to come and fetch me :D
The 7 is all fixex now apparently, I just have to get out to Mitchell to fetch him :o)
Last weekend MickC, Stevo and I all travelled down to Broadford for the PCRA round which Mick was racing in and Stevo took his trackie down for the practice day on the Friday.  There was some great racing and as usual I felt pretty useless around the pits but I had fun anyway - caught up with Billy and Stace and Nobby and Gig and Photomike which was awesome :D and the bug is biting again hard now… ran into Gos at the shops the other night and here’s hoping the bucket might undergo surgery this weekend (fingers crossed).  There is a chance I might be set for the one hour in November :D  We’ll see…

What else… still no boys, I think I’ve been through the Last Chance Saloon, Katrina and I have gone our separate ways and I am back in Melba, on my own now - and my place has a bright purple wall in the loungeroom and i LOVE IT.
Signing out… :o)

On Any Given Sunday

A week earlier the 7 had developed a “gremlin”.  Something somewhere was shorting out and blowing the ignition fuse.  The Kwaka Whisperer had been around to take a look, some wires were wiggled, the tank came on and off and without really doing anything much the 7 he was fixed.  For now.
I had meant to take him out for a good run on Saturday but just never got around to it, so Sunday it was to be.  Saturday night I saw a post from Yedi that he was going to do a ride out on Sunday, so I decided to join him.
As the meet point was at Maccas I left home at 9:30am to make sure I had plenty of time to get some breakfast before we left.  Diana on her ZZR250 pulled in just after I did so we got to chatting over coffee/breakfast and eventually others started rolling in - Sean on his baby Ninja, Nik on his yellow firestorm, the ’support vehicle’ and driver (sorry dude, I can’t remember your name!).  Glen and Cas turned up in the car just to say gidday to everyone… but still no sign of Yedi!  Eventually a motard rocked up with a black mohawk on the helmet and we’re all like nah that’s not Yedi, no red mohawk and firestorm.  But Yedi tricked us all, the motard was the reason for his rush trip to Melbourne on Friday night.  Awesome.  Lee also turned up on her R1 and eventually we were all ready to roll.
So somewhat later than anticipated we all left maccas Qbn and headed up the Kings to Bungendore.  I was last and was behind Lee who was behind Dianna (who has only had her L’s for 3 weeks).  I was expecting Lee to take off at the first overtaking bit but she didn’t, so I did :) Felt good to stretch the legs on the 7 but only for a bit as I was a bit worried about Constable Care being out and about so I backed off.  Regroup at Bungendore while we waited for Lee and Diana to catch up then Yedi took off, then Sean had to wait for a bit of a break before he could go and meanwhile two Ducatis came by which confused poor Sean because then he started following them for lattes…. realised his mistake so I passed him and we headed off for Tarago.  Before long we came across Yedi who had pulled over when he realised no one was behind him and then he showed us what the mighty DR650 can do (not that much in a straight line lol) it was nice though, for once I could keep up with him :D
We pulled in at Tarago for a regroup/smoko and soon enough everyone was there.  Diana had planned to just go home from there but we managed to convince her that Wakefield really wasn’t that far away now so she might as well come out there with us, so she did.
Tarago regroup
Tarago regroup
So we headed off to Wakefield where we checked out the track day that Yedi and I were supposed to be doing.  We hung out there for quite a while, ran into Macca and Bogan and also Avartie and Rider1.

Eventually Lee, Diana, Bogan and Macca all headed back for Canberra and the rest of us headed for Goulburn to top up the fuel before heading out to Crookwell.
I had never been to Crookwell on the bike before, Avartie led us down some goat track and as someone hadn’t gone for a toilet break at Goulburn, the bumpy road was very painful.  I was following Sean who is also on his L’s and he was doing pretty well :) I was very glad to get to Crookwell and luckily they pulled up across the road from some public toilets.  Yay.
Coffees were had and we warmed up by the fire for a bit before heading back to Canberra.  I sat behind Sean again and quickly everyone else was out of sight but that was OK, we just cruised through the countryside and it was very nice, so pretty out there :)  We rolled through Gunning, with Avartie and Nik going the other way as they were both low on fuel (shoulda fuelled at Goulburn boys :P ) and then we stopped in Gundaroo for one last smoke and to say our goodbyes.
There must have been a fair bit of rain as once we hit the Federal there was so much water on the road… and one of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever seen.  Got home about 5:30pm.  And the 7 - well he performed beautifully.  :D

Friday 23 April 2010

It's been a really long time...

I think my last blog was in November last year, and here we are at the end of April.
I guess I have been pretty busy in that time, December saw me sell the ZX9R and even though my heart was set upon a brand spanker ZX6R, to appease Bruce I rode a GSXR750 which I ultimately bought.  I went to the KSRC Xmas party, went on a snowies ride and got an epic puncture (bit of wood about as big as my thumb punched through a brand new Corsa III), first time any of my bikes had to come home on the back of a trailer :(.
Over the xmas break I went riding of course, 29th went to Dargo for a Skuffy ride then made my way up north, seeing in the new year with Robyn, Yedi & Jules at Blayney.  Spent a couple of nights up at the goldie with Jen and the rest of the family up there before heading back south and past Canberra to Corryong for the swim ride.
Later in January, seeing as I had a bit of cash, I decided that I would look at getting a ZX7R to have as a second bike, to be used as a commuter and if I wanted to put something on the track.  Well I was told the 7 would be a shit commuter and the GSXR would be much better on the track, but when have I ever listened to anyone? LOL.  I had my usual problem with ZX7R’s - getting to look at one before it was sold.  Eventually I found one - in QLD!  Not too far up the road from where Jen is now living so I arranged to have the Monday off work as Tuesday was Australia Day and set off after work on Friday just hoping that it wouldn’t have sold before I got there.  It didn’t!  I think the reason for this is the high kays on it - 92,xxx.  My uncle had driven me out to look at the bike and I rode it back to their place.  The plan was to leave the 7 there and come back for it in a couple of weeks, but new bike fever took over and the suzuki was parked up next to the XT for a bit.  I fell in love with the 7 on the way home.  Awesome bike.  When I flew back and rode the gixxer home the next week the decision was made - the 7 was going to be my number 1 bike!
In February I again celebrated my birthday in Tintaldra with the addition of a canoe trip which was nice.  The 7 loves the snowies!  Also attended Wetbucca on the 7, which again lived up to it’s name.
End of February saw the various KSRC crews heading down to Phillip Island for the CDT - the day before we left - disaster!  The 7 wouldn’t start!!!  He would bump start OK but the starter button wouldn’t do anything.  I was very tempted to take the 7 and just get the boys to take turns giving me a push :P but in the end I ended up taking the gixxer and had an awful ride, I just couldn’t get into a good rythym pretty much the whole trip.  And then the gixxer got it’s second epic puncture, and ended up spending a week on a farm down near Tooma (thank you so much to Farmer George for babysitting him!) and I ended up being dinked back to Canberra on the back of a Crim… which actually wasn’t as bad as it sounds, only my feet really got sore on the trip back and I actually quite enjoyed the run up the Elliot Way from the back, it was quite a different perspective.  Cath had kindly ‘gotten bored’ of riding so I got to have a turn of her ZX6R as well - it was very nice and so so so so similar to my Jimmy!  But I think if I was to choose between the two I would go the 03/04 over the 05/06 - I could notice the extra heat from the underseat exhaust.
The Tintaldra/Bright ride was on again at the end of March - much smaller crowd this year, which made for much quieter party nights and much better riding!  There was only one person there that I hadn’t met multiple times before which made it a lot more relaxing I think.  It was also the first time ever I think where I haven’t woken up hungover at Tintaldra.  Which actually made for some really awesome riding :D
I guess it must have been around mid-March that planning seriously got underway for The Adventure of a Lifetime (or at least the adventure for this year!)
Today I leave Canberra and will not be back for seven weeks, Robyn and I are riding around Australia.  A lot of planning has gone into this and we are raising funds for MARI (motorcycle accident rehabilitation initiative through ST Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney).  It is currently 5:30 am and I have slept very poorly, but told myself I am not allowed to get up before 6am.  Not sure if I’ll stick to that or not.
I am very excited of course and a little bit nervous.  I have never ridden the 7 really loaded up before (seeing as I only just got my ventura rack a couple of weeks ago, I put it on myself and it’s a bit ummm crooked/uneven/bent. )  I have also realised that it has only been in the last couple of months that I have really gotten over my 2008 trip.  I wonder how long it will take for me to get over this one?  I’m not sure, now that I think about it, whether it is a good thing or not… in a way I feel like a part of me that I found on that trip is again lost… anyway, I bet I’m about to find it again.  Wonder if some out of the way Roadhouse will offer me a job again… :D  I think Ksenia would hunt me down and do foul murder upon me if I didn’t return.
Well it’s 5:30am and I am done with this blog… I think stuff my rules, it might be coffee time.
