Ahhh The Snowy Ride...
After last year I wasn't convinced I was going to go again. The date conflicted with the FarNat FarRally. But when the time came, I chose to go on the Snowy Ride... how can you not? It is a good cause after all...
In the lead up funds got *very* tight and I ended up cancelling my accommodation (I was happy enough to leave my registration as a donation). But in the end I ended up in with the Canberra Riders guys :D
Headed out to Thredbo Friday afternoon and settled in... the boys had been out to Jindabyne to do some grocery shopping so all that was required was to claim a bed and open the bar :D Eventually after a meaty dinner (with oceans of potato salad) it was time to go to the pub and... where is everyone?? It was very quiet in there! Ran into Robyn though which was cool :D
Saturday morning dawned super bright and sunny! and.. wait for it... I actually felt like going riding! On the Snowy Ride! I must say this is thanks to Dids who insisted on using a measuring device when mixing our drinks rather than the usual 'guesstimation'...
So we all got dressed and headed out towards Khancoban where we got fuel and regrouped. Turns out that Tai had gone to get some oil for his R6 and there was an accident just out of Thredbo that had closed the road. So we settled in to wait for his arrival. There was a sausage sizzle (YUM) and I made a daisy chain (no photo) and then he turned up - miles in front of anyone else :D We let him have a bit of a break and then headed up the hill towards Cabramurra... holy fucking hell I remembered why I don't ride the Snowy Ride - just spent the whole way hugging the absolute left to give way to all the RIDERS on the wrong side of the road... anyway without incident we made it to Adaminaby for a late lunch (one of the best steak sangas EVAH), and our first stamp (Khancoban is no longer a check point). We got fuel and then headed to Berridale to get our second stamp but they had already packed up and gone home! OH NO!. Jindabyne for our second stamp and we quickly set off for Thredbo to avoid the mass ride. FAIL. The guys all got through but Miss Patience here didn't - they closed the road to us - there was one car and two bikes in front of me. le sigh.
Watched all the bikes roll out and out and out and eventually we got to go too... crawled into Thredbo, the mass ride turns in at the first exit and I thought about going straight and down the second exit but... decided what the hell, I rode with the Mass Ride thusfar... so I did the parade through Thredbo too :D I just went straight back to the chalet though as it was too hard to try and stop and park while riding two abreast :( So I didn't get my third stamp or my card in the draw for the bike :(
Eventually the guys came home and the bar was opened - we had another meaty dinner with oceans of potato salad before heading down to the pub. The band this year was Dirty Deeds (ACDC coverband for those who don't know) and we heard them start up... the guys were still finishing their drinks so I said I'd see them over there, found Sharie and Androo (with no kids - was most strange) and then found Robyn and we rocked out for the whole show - so much screaming along, I am surprised I had a voice left. Eventually the band was over and Robyn left and I went back to the pub to find the CR guys - but I hit the wall soon after and went home and to bed.
Sunday morning was bright and sunny again though I had a rotten headache so took some drugs and back to sleep for a bit. Most of the guys were heading straight back to Canberra for a variety of reasons but Craig, Tai and I decided to Charlotte Pass - somewhere I had never been before. So we checked out of the chalte and fuelled up at Jindabyne before heading up to Charlotte Pass and it was really nice!
There was plenty of snow at the top, Craig said I should go and stand in it for a photo and Tai promptly started throwing snowballs at me... he threw one at me and it was all set to go over my head until I stood up at just the right moment and copped it in the side of the face - freaking hilarious - Craig even managed to capture it on his phone hahahaha.
But all too soon it was time to head back home, had a good run back into Jindabyne for lunch, fuel at Cooma and then the slab back home.
(I hardly took any photos this weekend!!)

Swim Ride Reccie
As a change from previous years, Leen had decided to investigate Echuca as a spot for the 2013 Swim Ride. (For those playing at home for the last ??? I can't remember how many years, the Swim Ride has been ride to Corryong Friday, spend Saturday riding around to various swimming holes for a swim, then ride home Sunday).
At first there was a fair bit of interest in the reccie ride but it ended up just being Leen, Dazza and me from Canberra, with a plan to meet Alli (from Adelaide) at Echuca.
The weather forecast was truly horrible and I got a phone call from Leen on the Saturday morning to say they were taking the car, I could join them if I wanted. I chose to ride...
We met up at Gold Creek and set out under gray skies towards Jugiong for morning tea at the cafe there, which was quite nice. There was a little second hand bookstall set up there which we poked around in and the lady showed us the picture of the radar where we were heading... nasty.
Splash and dash for fuel at Gundagai and there we left the Doom behind, heading out through Nangus and onto Wagga the back way. Leen and Dazza stopped to check out a few swim spots along the way, I took the wussy option and waited on the bitumen hahaha.
We pretty much bypassed Wagga (YAY) and the lunch stop was left to me. Rolling into Uranquinty the signs for the bakery started appearing. It wasn't raining then but it was looking black as ahead so I decided the bakery would do. And it was fabulous, would definitely stop there again.
Before long it was time to hit the road again, and the stormclouds, heavy black and pendulous towards which we were riding, looked most terrifying. We turned left at Walbundrie and before long we were in it. Hail. Rain so heavy I couldn't see the speedo. The road was under water. I was soaked to the skin in seconds. The car slowed down and I followed them I think at about 40km/h, just hoping that I wasn't going to get run over by a truck from behind (I didn't).
Into Corowa for fuel, I was freezing!!! and wishing I had of gone in the car hahaha. The Seven started playing up after this as well, don't know if it was the fuel from Corowa, or whether it was carb icing but he wasn't happy (and neither was I!) Eventually we made it to Yarrawonga and found our motel for the night where we settled in and had a couple of drinks before heading over to the pub where there was an engagement party AND a bucks party - it was pretty crazy in there. So not in the mood for crazy. Back to the room and got a few hours sleep.
Sunday morning dawned clear and fucking freezing! My gear was all still soaked so I got back into it all and we started freezing our way along the Murray Valley Highway towards Echuca. The Seven was still playing up and it was worse trying to match the speed of the car so eventually I cracked the throttle (cough cough splutter ROAAAAAAWWWWWWRRRRRRR) and off we went. Some dude was stopped on the side of the road so I pulled up to make sure he was okay - dude from NZ just lost hahaha so we poured over the map for a bit, I hope he found his way okay, I'm not very good at giving directions!
Eventually caught up with Leen and Dazza in the car again and then we were in Echuca. We got to do laps of the back streets of Echuca cuz they didn't know where the visitor information centre was hahaha then I managed to get a little spot to park right in the centre of the touristy bit but Dazza had to go off to find somewhere to park the car. Alli turned up at pretty much the same time so we sat around and had coffee, then we went on a horse drawn carriage ride which was pretty cool and then spent a few hours poking around the shops. Finally it was time to get moving again and we got fuel in Moama and then off through Deniliquin and Conargo and into Jerilderie. I remember those roads :D Found our accommodation at the pub in Jerilderie and the drinkies started flowing, dinner at the pub and then it was bed time.
Monday Alli was heading back towards Adelaide and I decided to make my own way home so said goodbye to everyone and just made a beeline for home - Urana/Lockhart/Junee/Coota/Harden/Home It was a nice ride through some nice countryside, though what's with all the canola?? It seems there is more and more every year, now it seems like all you can see is canola fields.
OH and a decision was made - while Echuca is nice, it is waaaay to touristy for the swim ride and the road is too boring so the Swim Ride will be at Howlong :)
I only took one photo for the weekend and it is still uploading!

FarFail September 2012
I had taken Friday off work and woke up to the sound of thunder. Of course, it's a FarRide! I briefly wondered if this was some kind of omen...
I had a buckload of things to do, so I sat about on the couch thinking about it all for a while before nailing it and having some time to kick back and relax. All packed up, I was just getting into the bike gear when more thunder boomed overhead... I briefly wondered if this, also, was some kind of omen.
I headed out at about 11:45am, I had to drop my keys into the real estate agent's, so I did that, then to the servo for fuel and my start receipt - my start receipt was 12:00:36! (according to the clock on my bike it was 12:09). I didn't have a pen with me, so I decided to take a picture of my odo and write it on the receipt later... pulled my camera out and "MEMORY CARD FAILURE". Bugger. Spent some time stuffing around getting my phone out of it's waterproof hidey-hole, took my photo, and off I went. Heading up Southern Cross I tried turning my heated grips on and they promptly turned themselves off.... I figured that I had left the ignition on too long when stuffing around taking my picture and didn't think too much of it..
It was raining fairly heavily and I headed out on the Barton towards Yass. By Murrumbateman my feet and chest were soaked. By Yass (about 50km) I was soaked to the skin and freezing! Luckily my heated handgrips had recovered and at least I had toasty warm hands.
I had to pee really bad but I managed to make myself wait until I got to Gumly Gumly for fuel, I also had a little dim sim to warm up :D It continued to rain and I headed through Wagga Wagga trapped between B-doubles. Eventually about halfway to Narrandera the rain stopped, HURRAH! It still looked pretty nasty.
Splash and Dash at Narrandera... "you're the kawasaki" says the servo attendant. Yep. "Is it a 250?". No. a 600. "A 600. WOW!!!!". le sigh.
Headed out towards Hay and the weather stayed dry, hurrah! Got into the 110km/h zone and was pleasantly surprised at how far ahead of schedule I was. About halfway to Hay my heated grips turned themselves off again :( A bit further along I lost the dash... it's a bit weird to be cruising along under power and for my bike to appear "off" (0RPM, nothing on the screen). Crap. I was still probably 50km/h from Hay then so I flicked the indicators, nothing. Flicked the high beam on and the bike immediately started losing power... screw that, high beam off, bike recovered and a few minutes later dash came back on. Phew. Let's just get to Hay. 40km... the dash died again. Crap. 30km/h. the bike started losing all power so I started pulling over and the motor cut out. Pulled the seat off and couldn't see anything amiss however when I turned the ignition off and on again I had very faint lights on my dash, but the bike would not start.
Luckily I had service :D Put in a call to the NRMA, while I was on hold a Spyder came by... I knew it had to be Dene and it was! She turned around and came back. Nothing she could do but wait with me, NRMA would be there in half an hour they said, so she continued on and I went back to waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
Another bike approached and pulled up. He had a FarRider sticker on his bike, but I don't recall ever meeting him before, it was Shannon, who decided that he was going to wait with me until the NRMA came, even though I insisted that I was okay!
When after an hour the NRMA had still not shown up, I called back, turns out they had gone the wrong way out of Hay. By this time it was getting quite dark. and the mozzies... they were giants!
Eventually the NRMA turned up, he just brought the truck to bring me back so he could work on it in the workshop. But the bike started! So I took off with the towtruck behind me, but only made it about 5km before I lost the dash again... then watched as my headlight got dimmer and dimmer... so I pulled the plug. Loaded him up and road the rest of the way in the truck.
As we got into Hay Ian (my NRMA White Knight) we noted the large motel on the right being full up... Ian's daughter was with us and had predicted that the town was going to be pretty full that night. "that's 50 rooms!!!" says Ian.
Left the bike on the truck and he started looking at it, thought it might be a partially collapsed battery, rang around and got the number for the local bike shop guy who would have a battery available in the morning. Meanwhile Ian's daughter said she would try and find a motel for me... first one she rang had just had a cancellation so HURRAH I had a room! Apparently everywhere was completely booked out. So she drove me up so I could sort the room, done, back, still nothing on the bike so left it there, back to the motel where I had one of the best showers of my life (my knickers were still wet from the rain earlier... EWWWW TMI).
As it was pretty late, the Roadhouse was going to be my best bet for some dinner so wandered up there (it was quite a walk). Saw a few bikes heading in and when I was just about at the roundabout a BMW pulled up... "MELLIE". It was Karl! I bitched at him about my predicament for a bit while Kimmie and their friends caught up, then they set off for their accommodation and I went and had a big sulky burger with the works, bought a Marsbar for dessert and made the hike back to my room. Pretty tired so pretty much straight to bed.
Up and at 'em at about 7am.... COFFEEEEEEE! Wandered down the street a bit, nothing looked particularly open, but then I found Robertson's Hot Bread... what a find! Best coffee I have had in a long time. I also had a muffin which was pretty good but nowhere near as spectacular as the coffee.
Ian's daughter had given me a card with a number to call... "call about 8" she had said. I duly did so, only to get the answering machine. I left a message. And waited. at 9 I called again, answering machine again. So I called Ian's mobile (he was heading to Melbourne for the grand final). He called me back "bike should have been dropped at the bike shop first thing this morning". Righto. I knew where that was!
Wandered up to the bike shop and met Marg and John. John had had enough of a look at the bike to confirm that it definitely wasn't the battery and it was going to need some parts... we're not going anywhere :( So they started a job card while I went back to talk to NRMA about getting me home.
Chris from the NRMA Premium Care was very helpful. He reminded me that I had the option of getting a tow truck to take me and the six back to Canberra if I liked... that sounded easiest to me so I agreed to that. I rang Marg and they were fine with that too. So Chris said he would try and find a tow truck and would give me a call back. In the meantime the 10:00am checkout time was looming... the motel only had two rooms available for that night, the owner said he would hold mine for me while I sorted myself out... but the cleaners had cleaned all the other rooms, so I had to get out of mine 'just in case'.
I headed over the road back to Robertson's and this time I had a pie.
It was fabulous. (so was the second coffee). While I was there Chris rang me back... a tow truck was coming from Narrandera, would be here in about two hours. Awesome. So I finished my pie and coffee, headed back to the motel to get my stuff and the owner kindly drove me down to the bike shop :D
John was really good, he didn't charge me for looking at the bike. I had quite a wait and they were happy enough for me to hang out there while I waited. I put all the bits back on my bike and then we just chatted for ages. a couple of years ago various chapters(?) of the Rebels had all met up in Hay and all fuelled up at their servo... she showed me all the photos from the event, it was pretty amazing.
Eventually after a lot of hours waiting the tow truck turned up and the 6 was loaded up. I thanked John and Marg for all their help and then we were off, back to Canberra.
It was a pretty uneventful run back to Canberra, getting home about 9pm on Saturday night.
Sad panda =(
(turned out the stator was gone - Kawasaki covered it under warranty, replacing the reg/rec again at the same time).

Canberra Riders Birthday Ride
I haven't had much to do with CR for the last couple of years for various reasons. Was talking to Lurch on MSN one day and he mentioned the birthday ride and I consulted with the calendar and the stars and they all aligned so I said that I would attend.
I rolled up to the meet point in Bungendore to a large group of people of which I only knew about five LOL. All good. I volunteered to be arse end arnold for the day and off we went, through Tarago and into Goulburn for a splash of fuel - and Esther was missing!!! she'd gone to another servo. Eventually she turned up (phew) and off we went to Taralga for lunch - man it was windy! Lunch took a while as there were so many of us, and I think I managed to eat someone elses lunch as well as my own, oops.
Eventually it was time to move again so off we went towards Oberon then onto the Great Western Highway for the last stretch into Katoomba - lucky someone knew where they were going, I would never have found it! I can say that the Great Western Highway sucks big hairy donkey balls. Anyway into the YHA where we were staying and I was told that I had been nominated to share with Leen away from everyone else so into the room, got changed and then went in search of some supplies (ie coke for the booze). Sorted and into it :)
Dinner at the RSL was pretty good (all you can eat buffet yeah!) and before long it was bedtime because I was tired.
I don't know what came over me but I woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed (okay that might be overstating it a bit) but anyway I decided I was going to actually go on the ride. Not only that, I went on the early morning one with DJY also! (we went and had a look at the lookout).
For the main ride we were going out to Bells Line of Road, through Lithgow, up to Ilford then back to Bathurst through Sofala. I was again arse end arnold so off we went... onto Bells Line of Road and uh oh! There was a group pulled up so I pulled up too, unfortunately the less experienced rider in front of my lost the front in the gravel, he was okay so was the bike so we got moving but around the corner the leader pulled up again - turned out he'd binned the bike and it wasn't really rideable. Ooops. So we sent most of the group on, and Esther and I stayed. One of the guys came back from Lithgow with a brake lever so with that, some gaffa tape and cable ties we managed to get the bike rideable again. We just went straight to Bathurst and found the pub we were supposed to be having lunch at and it was good :D
After lunch we went and did a few laps of Mt Panorama then we split with most of the group heading straight back to Katoomba and a handful of us going through Tarana and Oberon (me included - quite the joiner this weekend I was). I had not done that road before and it was quite lovely.
Eventually back to Katoomba for a few chicken sticks for dinner and then some more drinkies and another earlyish night.
For the ride home it was a bit of a free-for-all. Nobodies plans really appealed to me so I made up my own. With spelling words and farchallenge photos to be had I headed out to Lithgow and up to Rylestone where I consulted the map and realised I could get a D and Dunedoo, then back across to Wellington where I stopped for one of THE MOST AWESOME KFC meals I have ever had :D Snapped my Wellington Caves shot then out through Dripstone and onto Stuart Town for an S for spelling and Euchareena as well. Lovely rolling countryside out there :o) Through Molong and Cudal and I was starting to run out of daylight, I wanted to make Boorowa before dark and I just about did...
That's just after the Cowra turn off so just a few kays out of Boorowa.
I had fuelled up in Cowra so I just picked a car to follow and followed them pretty much all the way home (I still had dark visor on).
Collecting The Seven
Well as some of you will remember I had a ZX7R with a stupid amount of kms up, I rode him around Australia and after I got back he was nothing but trouble and kept breaking down but I still loved him, and eventually I had to sell him to raise funds because I thought buying a house was a really good idea.
The day that his new owner came and picked him up, I waved him goodbye, went back upstairs to my little flat and promptly bawled my eyes out. Seriously. It was like a huge break up!
Fastforward 18 months, I'm in the house now and I found another ZX7R on the internet, but it was in Bundaberg. Turns out there is a FarRider in Bundaberg so he went and checked it out for me, gave it a thumbs up so I bought it (Thanks Eddie!). The dealership delivered it to Springwood Suzuki and I flew up to the Gold Coast on the Thursday night.
Friday morning bright and early Jen and I headed up to Springwood and I took collection of the ZX7R II.
He is so beautiful! I had forgotten just how wide these bikes are, I can get my heels on the ground - just - but I cannot put weight on both of them at the same time. So after a final check over, off I went. I found my way back to the M1 and started heading south back to Jen's place (Jen had to go to work). I saw a sign that said Tamborine and Beenleigh and I almost turned off there for an adventure but decided not too. Got to the Oxenford turnoff and instead of turning right at the lights I went straight and headed out to Canungra. The 7 purred along beautifully though the brakes are seriously lacking in comparison to the 6. Found my way out to Tamborine which is a challenge location, but I couldn't find the right spot. I decided to leave it and headed towards Beenleigh but not far up the road I changed my mind, chucked a u-ey and headed back to Tamborine for the photo.
I had also forgotten just how far over the 7 sits on it's side stand. Putting it down here was quite scary and getting it back up quite difficult! and his dainty little foot... LOL
Anyway got my picture and headed back towards Canungra. I decided to just go back to Jen's place as it was getting quite warm and I was a bit sleepy. Rolled back through Maudsland, thought about going up Tamborine Mountain but decided not to as I was still getting used to the brakes (or lack thereof) and also all the extra weight. I then spent a few hours playing with Jen's puppies and chilling out in the sun and had a nanna nap before heading over to my aunty's place for dinner.
Jen had work on Saturday morning so it was early to bed and early to rise.
We had breakfast together on Saturday morning, and all too soon it was time to get on the road. I waved bye to Jen (and had a pat of her belly, bye Dinobaby! See you in January!).
I had a plan for the ride home that saw me getting a few challenge pictures as well as the spelling word VALLEYS. I headed out on the M1 looking for the Varsity Lakes turnoff - and I never saw it. Oh well, too much riding to be done, I'm not going to stuff around trying to find it! I crossed back into NSW (boooo) and turned off for Murwillimbah. Rolled through Condong and thought that was where Charlie lived so a big mental hallo as I passed through, then out the other side of Murwillimbah and on the road to Nimbin. The road was in pretty poor condition, very windy, bumpy and shadows hiding the potholes! There were also a few stretches of roadworks, including one coming into Nimbin behind the watercart... so much for the clean shiny bike LOL.
Got my challenge pic at Nimbin and continued on to Lismore just down the road for an L for spelling
It was starting to get really hot here and I thought I was going to have to take the winter lining out of my jacket (I was already minus neckwarmer, thermals, and jumper!) Just beautiful :o)
Headed out through Casino and had a good run through the twisty bit of the Bruxner Highway. Coming into Tenterfield I decided I was going to stop for some lunch, once in town I saw a sign for "world famous pies" so I found the shop and purchased a very expensive steak and bacon pie. And it was TERRIBLE! The casing was overcooked, at my first bite the lid fell off, it was full of PEAS (Ewwww) and the chunks of meat were floury. Didn't spot any bacon either. So I only ate half of it (and the lid - the tomato sauce made that the best bit). Had a drink and headed up the road for fuel and continued on down the New England Highway to Deep Water for the Emmaville turnoff. This is a nice alternative to the highway, even if it only saves you about 40km of highway (I think).
I had originally found Emmaville while out hunting spelling towns over summer. This time there was roadworks, roadworks everywhere! The entire town was pretty much dirt LOL! Anyway, snapped my challenge pic and headed out for Glen Innes. The road from Emmaville to Glen Innes is very nice, gently winding its way through the countryside :o) All too soon it was back on the highway.
A quick stop at Llangothlin for spelling.
and into Guyra for the next Challenge pic. It got really cold around here! Was missing my heated grips and had to make do with swapping the summer gloves for winter gloves (didn't add any other layers though). A decent break here while I warmed up a bit in the sun.
I was meant to stop for a spelling picture in Armidale but didn't for some reason, so just got fuel and kept going, hoping that it would get warmer as I dropped down to Tamworth.
Through Uralla and I almost stopped to take a photo of the horsey in the daylight (instead of the dark and fog like in the rally) but didn't. Had a good run down the hill :D
Thankfully it had warmed up again by now. Heading into Tamworth I started thinking about where I was going to spend the night. I generally don't do the New England Highway south of Tamworth but there was the Scone picture to get... I really wanted to head for Coolah but in the end decided to stick to my original plan and go to Scone so I rolled straight through Tamworth. As the sun started to go down it got cold again and as I lost the last of the daylight I started thinking it was time to stop. I had picked Murrurundi as my next fuel stop and that was the first place that I found accommodation as well.
$45.00 saw me a room with a queen bed (and two singles) so I parked the 7 round the back and lugged all my gear upstairs. I thought about a shower, but decided dinner was more important so headed back downstairs. The pub was quite... 'posh' I guess, if a pub can be posh, anyway I sat in the corner and ate my steak (quite good) had a quiet drink and then just headed upstairs, had my shower and crawled into bed at a stupidly early hour.
Which meant I woke up at a reasonably early hour and it was pretty cold. My phone told me it was 6 degrees so I took my time getting ready, I was just putting the last couple of things in my bag, I had left the door open and then someone appeared in the hallway LOL a dude in his undies... obviously he, like me, didn't realise there was anyone else there! I assume that because he looked a little bit embarrassed (so did I, I am sure). Anyway he said gidday and so did I, he disappeared and I lugged all my stuff downstairs only to find that the door was locked and I couldn't get out. Went back up and got my key and tried the spare key on the door, nope won't unlock. Back up and tried to find some other way out, nope. I ended up going down a hallway, round a corner, through another room and then I finally found a door to the outside that I could unlock from the inside. Was beginning to think I would have to wait for them to open up.
I had been a bit worried about leaving the 7 out overnight, as the old 7 used to have problems starting if left uncovered on a cold night, but this one he started first go - YAY! So loaded up and warmed up we headed out... and I remembered that 6 degrees in other places is not like 6 degrees in Canberra, there was a noticeable absence of ice from the wind.
My phone had also told me that overnight a new spelling word had gone up - plateaus. Hmmmmm. Next town along...
I still hadn't got fuel but wasn't on reserve yet so headed down to Scone where I filled up at the BP and then copied the Harley riders group I met there on the Rally and rode the huge ride to Maccas next door :o) A rosti wrap thingo and a coffee later, we were both filled up and ready to roll.
My original ride plan had me turning off at Scone and heading over the lovely road to Merriwa, then over to Wellington and Cudal for challenge pics. I changed my mind over breakfast, continued south on the NE HWY a bit more for...
an "A" and then I took the road from Muswellbrook over to Sandy Hollow... and didn't stuff up this time (last time I came this way I misread a sign and ended up on a dirt road through paddocks complete with creek crossings LOL). Saw the first alive wildlife along here, I think it was a pig??? it was a fair distance ahead of me anyway.
Across the Golden Highway and onto the Bylong Valley Way... spectacular scenery along here... and I started seeing plenty of bikes. I had a really good ride along here, apart from a rather hairy moment crossing some railway lines in which I thought I was going to go over the handlebars!
Pulled into Rylstone for fuel and an Ambulance came screaming through town, out the way I had come :o( the guy in the servo said over summer the ambulance is up there once or twice ever weekend for bike accidents :o(
Continued on and stopped for a bit of a break at Ilford for a drink, etc. It was just a perfect day for riding now :o)
I had forgotten to clean my visor at Rylstone.
Back on the road and headed over towards Sofala. Had a really good run through here with no traffic. Stopped at Wattle Flat for another challenge pic
And then it was on to Bathurst where there was some kind of Event on which had people running and the SES stopping traffic to let the runners through. Eventually I made my way through to Mt Panorama for the next Challenge pic :o)
No Micky to take my picture this time!
This is the challenge pic, up the top of the hill
On the first lap, just when I reached the top of the hill, a car pulled out in front of me and then the rest of them had to give way to me - it was a huge line of Holdens. I pulled over to let them all past once I got down the bottom of the hill and decided that seeing as I was there I had better go round a second time :D I am still too chicken to go down the hill without braking though! lol.
Found my way back out to the highway and onto Cowra where the little evil voice inside my head convinced Sensible Mel that KFC for lunch was a really good idea... so food for me and fuel for the seven and then it was the final stretch home through Boorowa. Got in about 4pm and tucked the 7 up next to the 6 <3

Border Run 2012 and the Scenic Way Home
Border Run
2012
Once again
it was time for the Border Run - hurrah!
I had initially booked in my leave to start on the Wednesday, with the
intent to get the border on Friday so that I could spend Saturday kicking back
and just watching all the bikes roll in.
Alli and I had a loose plan to meet up at Port Augusta on the Thursday,
then that got change to meeting up at Ceduna on Friday morning as she wanted to
catch up with some relatives on the Thursday night. I had been a bit worried about the cold
starts and doing a 1,000km day (I had registered to do the FarRide) and
eventually on the Monday I came to the realisation that I don’t have to
do 1,000km day, I finished up all my work and my boss let me have the Tuesday
off as well :D
Also, not
that long before the start the FarChallenge was issued - 50 locations around
Australia, the challenge - to take a picture of my bike at as many of them as I
can in the next year.
Got home
and attempted to start packing - well I managed to fit two sleeping bags, a
blanket, a foam mat and a self-inflating mattress into a bag. That was a good start.
Tuesday
morning I woke up and managed to pack everything else and get the bike loaded
up in reasonably good time, I think it was by about 9am. But it was still too cold to leave so I hung
about until maybe 10:30am before getting under way, when the temperature got
above 5 degrees.
As I was
heading out on Ginninderra Drive, I was going to turn up Kingsford Smith Drive
but then I thought nah… I’ll go down to the end of Ginninderra Drive, I think
that ways actually a bit quicker…. Well it would be if I was going to Sydney, I
was supposed to be going west. I
realised after I had just passed Kingsford Smith Drive so I turned at Copland
Drive instead (duh).
I headed
out through Yass and onto the Boorowa Road.
The sun was out and the
countryside was pretty but I was cold and just wasn’t enjoying it really. Cowra for fuel then out through Eugowra
and into Parkes for a short stint on the
Newell before turning off for Narromine after Peak Hill. For some reason SPOT has me starting just
north of Peak Hill… I don’t know why.
Fuel again
at Narromine then west with Cobar on my mind for the night. Before long I was sick of riding into the
sun, so decided to try my luck at Nyngan, the first pub was booked out, but the
Overlander had a room for $60.00.
$60.00!!! Yikes! But I didn’t want to keep riding into the sun so what
the hell. Turned out it had an ensuite
so it was definitely reasonable. A
shower and a walk down to the RSL for a pretty good mixed grill (they have salad
bar as well) and then back to the pub to stand in front of the fire for ages
before heading up and crawling into bed and watching the Olympics for a bit.
I woke up
during the night, I had dreamed that I had ridden through Cobar and Broken Hill
and then gone home, forgetting to take the FarChallenge photos and it was the
next morning and I was all like “but I forgot about the Border Run, now I have
to go out again”. Took me a moment to
realise I wasn’t at home, in fact I was in a pub room in Nyngan and had yet to
pass through Cobar and Broken Hill LOL!
Wednesday
morning came around and my phone informed me it was quite cold. I stayed in bed for ages before getting up
and venturing out in search of coffee and breakfast (across the road). The lady in the café was feeling quite bad -
she had been rousing on her daughter as she is always running late in the
morning. The night before the daughter
had, in an attempt to speed up the process in the morning, put her school
uniform on and then put her pyjamas on over the top and gone to bed so that in
the morning all she had to do was take off her pjs and she would be ready….
Such logic!
Finally it
warmed up enough for me to leave, about 9am I think. Thought about fuel, figured she’d be right to
Cobar so off I went in the morning sun.
I stopped at the big Cobar sign and went to take my picture…. Oops
forgot the flag so got my photo properly, then fuel and continued on. I was a bit edgy about stopping in Wilcannia
for fuel so wanted to get that over and done with ASAP. As I rolled into town, I think it was a
different Wilcannia to the one we stopped at in 2009 (though I could see the
same servo we stopped at, though now it is a Liberty). I saw a sign pointing to a BP so I followed
the signs and it was a fuel pump in a
dirt driveway with a tin shed for an office but the lady was very friendly - no
toilets but she let me use the one in her laundry (the house was next
door). A suggestion was made for a
coffee shop up the road but instead I continued on and stopped at a rest area
about 16km past the town for a bit of a break.
Onwards and Broken Hill came about… I remember loving the
countryside in 2009 - this time I just didn’t care, I actually just wanted to
go home, wasn’t enjoying myself at all really.
Flew straight past the location for the FarChallenge pic (I think), oh
well, I’ll find something in town. Fuel
again and continue south. The day was
starting to run out and I was getting cold.
I stopped for fuel in Yunta and was informed that the pub over the road
had accommodation and meals so I stopped in there. The publican was a bit… funny and the room
was $60.00 (again!) but I really didn’t feel like continuing on so paid
it. The publican’s wife showed me around
the back where I could park my bike in the car port, etc. and a big fat
Labrador was in a yard out there. I was
advised that he was too old and fat to jump the knee high fence when he barked
at me! She told me that his favourite
game was to NOT give you the ball, but to let you just try and take it away
from him. So I tried for a bit J
The shower
was not very good at the hotel but the room had a heater (and an electric
blanket!!) so I warmed up in there before heading into the bar for dinner. It was a very quiet night, apart from a
couple of people coming in for takeaways I was the only one there, so chatted
with the publican and his wife. Turns
out he has a Goldwing so we exchanged riding stories. Steak and chips with Diane sauce for dinner
and it was FABULOUS. Another early night
and I went back to my room and crawled into bed with the electric blanket and
wished some more that I was at home.
Thursday
morning wasn’t as cold as I had expected (they had had minus 5 the night before
I was there) so over to the roadhouse for some cereal and coffee before packing
up and playing with the lab some more.
This morning I didn’t try and get the ball from him so instead he gave
it to me and I played fetch with him for quite some time. But eventually I got going and kept heading
south… I crossed a bridge, the three sisters bridge and it made me think of my
sisters so I stopped and took a photo… then I did battle with the winds on
through Peterborough and Wilmington and onto Horrocks Pass.
I roughly knew where the cairn was but I had
never been up there, so my FarChallenge card and the wind had quite a battle
while I tried to take a picture but eventually I got it and down down I
went. I had hoped the wind would have
eased off down the bottom but nope. Gave
a big salute to Davo as I passed the plaque site and into Port Augusta for fuel…
something wasn’t right. It was now a
Gull! Parked the bike and hid behind him
from the wind while I ate some bickies before proceeding on. I had heard from Alli here too - she was
having a slow start and hadn’t left home yet.
She thought she would be lucky to make Port Augusta that night let alone
Streaky.
I was
debating whether or not to head down to Elliston for the next FarChallenge pic
or to get it on the way home and just head straight for Ceduna, I made the call
at Kyancutta and turned left. At Lock I
turned right and what an eerie road that was, through all the farmlands, a bit
of road in very good repair and absolutely NO ONE on it. There was nobody, didn’t see a single
person. It was a bit freaky
actually. Into Elliston and rode around
trying to find the sign in the picture.
Didn’t find it so snapped this one then on to get fuel (found it at the other
entrance to Elliston lol). While I was
getting fuel two guys on adventure bikes turned up, got chatting as you do and
I asked if they were heading to the border run… “the what????” actually one of
them had heard of it but had no idea when it was on. They were heading over to Perth from
Melbourne and thought that they would be passed the border by Saturday but
would keep it in mind. Wished them well
in their travels and continued on. I had
planned to stay at Ceduna and also had in my head that Streaky Bay was really
expensive and I didn’t want to stay there but by the time I got to Streaky I
had had enough of riding into the sun (again!) so pulled up at the pub where
$60.00 (yes again) saw me with a budget room upstairs. What an awesome shower!!!! Went down for dinner and there were a few
people who I expected were on the border run.
I had dessert and was thinking about going up to bed and watching some
more Olympics when YAYAY Chicky turned up at my table with Bill and a couple of
other blokes I didn’t know. They ended
up at the table next to me and asked me to join them which I did. My mood was instantly better, these guys are
awesome, I really enjoyed the time I spent with them last year. Barry turned up too and I was introduced to
the two guys who weren’t there last year (Trev and Possum). Spent ages there chatting with them and
listening to their banter. These guys
have all known each other for longer than I have been alive and I find it
really interesting and warming to sit in on their discussions. Eventually though it was time for everyone to
go to bed so they left for the caravan park and I went back upstairs, after
finding out they were heading for Penong the next night at the caravan park, if
I wanted to stay there also.
I messaged
with Alli - she was at Stirling North for the night and thought Penong sounded
good so we had a plan to meet there and see how we were going.
Friday
morning I found my way downstairs for the complimentary continental breakfast
(raisin toast AND cocopops! Yay!) and then went for a walk down to the end of
the jetty. It was a bit cold but I stood
on the end and faced the sun and it was beautiful. There was a fishing boat there so I had a bit
of a sticky beak at that and then headed back to pack up and get moving.
All loaded
up, Chicky & Co. were at the museum, I thought about stopping too but I had
heard a rumour of a really good pie shop in Ceduna… I should have stopped lol!
Stopped for
a little break at Smoky Bay and then into Ceduna to do laps trying to find the
pie shop… I found a cafĂ© with homemade sausage rolls so got one of those and took
it down to the foreshore where I texted Alli to let her know where I was at and
hung out for about an hour. Eventually I
got sick of standing there so continued on to Penong where I got fuel and then
set up camp at the picnic table, I got there about 1pm lol.
I got sick
of sitting there, though it was nice in the sun, so decided to go and check out
the caravan park. I think I confused the
owners a bit, I think they though I was part of Chicky’s group, they had never
heard of the border run. It was really
windy again, so the owner said I could set up my tent in the shed. I did so and it wasn’t until later I thought
that I should have (a) tried for a cabin or (b) not bothered with the tent and
just had my sleeping bag… oh well!
The caravan
park was pretty deserted but I managed to go and have my shower at exactly the
same time as the only other person there, lol, and then crawl into my tent for
a bit of a nanna nap while waiting for Alli.
After a while I heard a bike pull up, I got all excited thinking it was
Alli so stuck my head out of the tent and it was Mark with a K, on a
ZZR1100. “What are you doing here” he
says? Lol! Chance meetings. So he set up on the other side of the
shed. Chicky & Co. arrived at some
stage, they were planning to have a bbq (which was in our shed). Still waiting for Alli… I had that … uneasy …
feeling when you are waiting for someone and haven’t heard from them. Mark and I were just about to head over to
the pub when I heard her bike coming YAYAYAYAYAY!!!! She joined us in the shed and then we all
headed over to the pub for a couple of drinks and some dinner (beef parma that
barely fit on my plate). Alli said that
she rode for a bit with two guys who were heading to Madura and back to Border
Village for the night. Gotta be
FarRiders I thought, she said they were “Tony and Chris”. What a shame I thought, would have been
awesome to catch them! But tomorrow I guess.
There were
a bunch of dudes in the pub, some of them were pretty messy, but we had a
really interesting chat with a farmer, about the challenges they face out there…
“I’m not complaining but” he says… says he wouldn’t be anywhere else. Eventually we headed back to the caravan park
after nearly getting lost in the dark LOL then crashed Chicky & Co’s party
for a bit before crawling into bed. My
two sleeping bags worked well, I was nice and warm!
Friday
morning - I saw the beginning of sunrise as I walked over to the toilets… and
then I crawled back into bed. Eventually
we all got up and wandered over to the roadhouse for breakfast then back to
pack up… Mark got sick of waiting for us so off he went and eventually Alli and
I got going too. Fuel at Nullarbor and
then the final run into Border Village wishing with all my might that there was
a cancellation and we would get a bed.
Pulled up
at Border Village and there were not as many bikes as usual there… inside to
try for a room and the lady says she will have to get the manager. When she left I noticed my name written in
the book!!!!!!! Turns out that they DID
have my booking from last year after all, hurrah!!!! So we got our little donga
down the back :D We got changed and then
it was time to socialise. Found Gatey
and TonyK, after missing them yesterday, was great to catch up with them,
Nambucca seems like forever ago! While I
was standing at the bar waiting to order a drink (I was a bit invisible I
think) a guy who was sitting next to me very kindly offered me his seat!
Chivalry in this modern world, well I never… :D
We got chatting for a bit and his name is Geoff and is from Perth and it
was his first border run (I reckon he’ll be back). Found Gatey and Tony again and was much
amused by Gatey taming a crow with twisties, he actually had it eating out of
his hand!
I felt like
chips for dinner so ordered the chicken drumsticks because they came with chips…
I was very disappointed when my plate turned up with a few puny drumsticks and
a pile of salad and NO CHIPS. I queried…
apparently it wasn’t supposed to be listed as coming with chips. Not much of a dinner, lucky I wasn’t all that
hungry to begin with or there would have been trouble! Lol. Caught up with a few more people, partook in
the FarRiders group photo, played some pool and before too long I hit the wall
and it was time for bed. So off to our
little donga. I woke up pretty early and
got a bit bored lying in bed so snuck out to the roadhouse and left Alli to a
sleep in, I had coffee and caught up with a few that I had missed catching up
with last night (I think the border run needs to last for at least a week to
properly catch up with everyone!), then I went and caught up with the two guys
from Elliston, and one even let me sit on his bike (for a big looking adventure
bike it was quite small and light)… I had locked the door behind me when I left
so didn’t want to disturb Alli but eventually I did… up to the roadhouse for
breakfast , watched the last riders leave and then we eventually went and
packed up our stuff.
Fuel and
then we were on our way (after confirming they weren’t taking bookings for next
year yet L ).
We stopped
at the first ‘scenic’ lookout and it was quite pretty.
We stopped
at the second ‘scenic’ lookout and it was even prettier… though the road in was
a bit hairy! LOL lucky it was short.
The third ‘scenic’
lookout took my breath away… just magnificent.
We ended up spending, I don’t know, maybe an hour there? Just watching
the waves pound against the cliffs… pure magic.
The fourth ‘scenic’
lookout was the best of them all.
At the third lookout we met this lady called Barb. Barb was travelling home to Western Australia from holidaying in Queensland where she had contracted whooping cough. She is travelling alone and just sleeps in her car, she was heading to Border Village that day. Barb is 76. She was quite inspirational, I hope that I still have an adventurous drive when I am that age!
Eventually we made it to Nullarbor Roadhouse where we got the third last room,
turns out they were having a function there that night, the girl behind the
counter thought they were nuts, why the hell would you want to go out there?
Apparently she doesn’t like it very much out there. I had some washing to do so we sorted that
first and then went into the bar to source a drink (me very classy in my pj’s
as my jeans were in the wash haha), we wanted to get some vodka to take away as
we wanted to sit outside our room and watch the sun go down but they only had a
full size bottle… and it was $72.00.
$72.00.
Stuff it, I
bought it. (The Ridiculously Expensive
Vodka Bottle is now sitting on my shelf at home on display!). Alli got the coke and some chips and we
dragged half the furniture out of our room to settle in and watch the
show. There was another rider, Mark,
staying a couple of rooms up, he has been riding around Australia for the last
five months, he meant to make the border run but got sick in Esperence so
missed it by a bit, he might have a go next year though J
Anyway we traded stories with him for a bit before the main show, he
left to and get dinner and well Alli and I got a little bit sidetracked with
the sunset show and the vodka and talking to some dudes about augers…. Well if
we wanted dinner in the bar we had to order by 7:30pm and we missed it!! But that’s okay we just had it in the
roadhouse (me still in my jammies but now with bike jacket as my jumper was
also in the wash). Eventually our
washing was dried so back to the room to sort that and then into bed where Alli
tried to explain what was happening in “Once Upon a Time” to me but I failed to
understand so promptly fell asleep.
Monday
morning I woke up before Alli and went out in search of coffee, Mark was
packing up so chatted to him for a bit before trying to sneak back into the
room but waking Alli up. We all had
breakfast in the roadhouse, then Mark left and Alli and I went back to packing
up and then it was off to Head of Bight to see the whales. Beautiful, though every time I pulled my
camera out they stopped doing cool things (like tail shows and sticking their
noses up in the air) and went underwater so I gave up in the end and just
watched… pretty cool J oh
yeah and more cliffs to watch the ocean pound against…
After about
an hour and a half we figured we should probably get moving so into Penong for
fuel (where we spotted Mark across the road at the pub, big waves across the
street) and then we went into Ceduna and found the right pie shop and…
THEY HAD
RUN OUT OF PIES
*CRIES*
So Alli got
a sandwich and I got a hotdog and we contented ourselves with that. We had been planning on staying at Venus Bay
for the night so we looked it up but we couldn’t determine that we would
actually get anything to eat there, as it was we ran out of daylight (and
warmth) by the time we got to Streaky Bay so we just got a room there… and
found Mark there as well. We had a
couple of drinks and then it was dinner time, more sharing of stories with Mark
(he has had some adventures on his trip!) and then he left and Alli and I did
the same… after a big dessert :D
Tuesday
morning we got up and had our breakfast and thought about a walk out on the
jetty but it was a bit windy and cold so we skipped it. Packed up and while Alli was out on one load
with her stuff, she took ages to come back and it turned out her cousin had
turned up so we had a bit of a chat before getting underway. We ran into Mark again at the servo, wished
him well as he was going to the ferry to go to Adelaide so we wouldn’t cross
paths again. We also decided to skip
going to the sea lion colony as it would have involved about 70km of dirt and I
was too chicken.
We went
down to Venus Bay for a look around and it was WINDY. Got lots of sand blown into my face lol. Had a quick break there then over to
Kyancutta for a pie then Kimba for some more food… terrible haha. We were planning on staying at the Nutbush
Retreat but when we got there, they didn’t have any meals on that night. We didn’t want to go hungry so instead into
Port Augusta for fuel and then up Horrocks Pass and into Wilmington for the
night. We arrived in rush hour, took the
poor lady behind the bar some time to get to us. And we were quite thirsty! Got the bikes around the back then a long hot
shower for me and a few drinks and it was dinner time… the mixed grill won…
just! It was fantastic though. An earlyish night, I roasted myself with the
electric blanket hahaha.
Wednesday
morning and it was to be the Parting of the Ways. We had breakfast across the road and then
said our farewells (though I would follow Alli to just out of Melrose).
While we
were at Nullarbor Nico had posted up a new spelling word, BUTTBURNER so while
we were there I grabbed a photo for an N and headed off to Booleroo Centre for my
first B, then onto Burra for another B and a FarChallenge photo :o) Down the Worlds End Highway and it was still
windy as. Robertstown for an R and
Eudunda for the E, through Kapunda and on to Tarlee for a T and another
FarChallenge pic. As soon as I turned
towards Tarlee the sky just looked terrible.
I almost wished I had of skipped the FarChallenge pics and chased the
good weather instead! But no, I got in amongst it, through a lot of towns I don’t
remember (and there were a lot of towns) and then I found myself in the
Adelaide Hills. I was trying to get to
Clarendon, and it looked on my map like there was this really easy road that
would take me there but stuffed if I could find it. I ended up doing 95km to end up 5km from
where I started. It was raining, there
was so many towns, I ended up at a little town called Crafers where a
T-intersection sign said left for Adelaide (wrong way) and right for Stirling
(also wrong way, and I’d already been there lol) so I consulted my phone which
told me to go south… stuffed if I knew which way was south so I ended up
cracking the shits with the whole thing… SCREW YOU CLARENDON, I’M GOING HOME
(or to Strathalbyn). So I jumped on the
freeway and headed east and as soon as I passed Stirling the sun came out…
Into
Strathalbyn where the ladies in the visitor info centre helpfully told me it
was really easy to get to Clarendon from there… I just didn’t even want to know
about it anymore lol. I was looking for
some cheapish accommodation, they said $90 at the caravan park for a cabin or
$70 for a pub room at the pub… serious?
$70 for a pub room? No way (I’d
seen the pub, it didn’t look real nice), so I headed on to Wellington instead
where they wanted $50.00... I didn’t want to go any further so said okay, turns
out that it included an ensuite, a TV and reverse cycle air con (HEATER!!) so
that was actually pretty good. Funky
smelling water though lol. Anyway had a
brilliant dinner there too (another steak and chips) before finding an extra
doona in the cupboard and climbing into bed to watch more Olympics and then to
sleep.
In the
morning I got up and went for a little stroll down to the river (the pub is
right on the river) and it was beautiful.
But I had to get moving so I packed up, got fuel and had a lonely ferry
crossing before making my way to Parilla for a FarChallenge pic and Pinnaroo
for the same… at the bakery (had to try a pie while I was there… it was good
but it fell apart so a bit messy).
I had a big
decision to make here… which way will I go?
My original plan had been to go through Ouyen and Tooleybuc, Moulamein,
etc. But then I decided that I still had
plenty of time, I didn’t have to be home until Sunday, so I was going to go and
find Buninyong and Wangaratta and get those FarChallenge pics as well…
yeah. So I did a few laps of Pinnaroo as
I forgot where the servos are (oops) then set off for Bordertown and crossed
into Victoria. I got rained on a bit
along there and for the rest of the day on and off.
I had
identified a few roads to get me off the A8 but in the end I just sat on
that. Stopped and took a picture of the
big cranky looking koala at Dadswell Bridge (thanks Ken!). Into Ballarat with the FUEL FUEL YOU NEED FUEL blinking
furiously at me then found the CFA shed at Buninyong. It was pretty much dark by that time so hit
the freeway towards Melbourne and found my way to the M31 to start heading for
Wangaratta (next FarChallenge spot).
Stopped at Seymour for fuel and a thaw out, I was very, very cold by
then! I ordered a hot chocolate and a
box of 3 dimsims… It turned out to be a magical box of dimsims, I thought it
was never going to run out (I think the lady took pity on my and gave me
extras). Warmed up as best as I could,
back onto the bike where it promptly started raining on me properly hahaha but
the dimsims and hot chocolate kept my belly nice and warm so it was much more
bearable. I had worked out that
Wangaratta would have me at about 1020km for the day, enough to qualify me as a
finisher for the border run (on FarRiders), and that was only 145km away so I
admired the big fat raindrops in my headlights and the trucks as I passed them
and eventually I got to Wangaratta at about 10:15pm. I decided a motel would be in order, the
first one was on the outskirts, that won’t do, but the second one was next door
to maccas… that’ll do, and it was only $80.00 AND it had a heater AND an electric
blanket :D
Spent an
age in the shower before dressing up and braving the outside world again to
fetch some maccas… one of the best cheeseburgers I have ever had. Had a chat on the phone with my sister for
quite a while then it was time for bed (and I roasted myself again hahaha).
Friday
morning was cccold in Wangaratta! Eventually I dragged myself out of bed, put
on all the clothes I had and got some more maccas for breakfast (I don’t
usually eat maccas when I am out on rides so it was a bit odd). Eventually it warmed up enough for me to get
started and I headed to Rutherglen for an R, then Urana and Uranquinty for U x
2 and The Rock for a T. With all the
spelling letters obtained I headed through Wagga and onto Ladysmith for the
last FarChallenge pic for this ride…and there was a black GTR1400 that is not black (lol) coming the
other way… gotta be a FarRider surely.
Sure enough, I pulled up at the Ladysmith sign to see where the pic was
supposed to be and Gus (from WA) pulled up, I had thought it might be him. He’d come up from Eden that morning over the
Awesome Road (aka Snowy Mountains Highway).
Dude, no way I would go there in winter!!! But he had a good run so that
is good. Wished him well in his travels,
got my pic and then it was a beeline for home.
Got in about 4pm and spent another age in the shower… I love my
shower!
